We waited - the sun, warm weather, birdsong … After a melancholic autumn, cold winter and damp spring, it seems to us that problems go away along with bad weather and life is about to get better. This means that you can save money on a psychologist. But is it?
Quite often, clients who came to therapy a month or more before the summer by June begin to cancel appointments more and more often, go on vacation for a long time, or honestly admit that they want to complete therapy. Sometimes they say: "The sun is outside, you can walk for a long time, walked now and thought how good it is, everything is getting better by itself" or "There is almost no rain, immediately I feel less sad, I hardly cry." As a person, I am very happy for them. Yes, even as a psychologist I am glad - not everyone is able to notice and rejoice at this. But still, as a specialist, I understand what exactly provokes the termination of the sessions and creates the illusion of positive dynamics.
Working with a psychologist is difficult. It is not always pleasant and often painful. And summer beckons with its "sweets": vitamin D in unlimited quantities, and even after winter avitaminosis, just as fresh fruits and vegetables replenish the body's reserves; hence - the additional production of serotonin and endorphin, the work of the body as a whole is getting better, there is a feeling of strength and vigor. And, of course, if the therapy was at least a little effective, it seems that the changes are already there and this is quite enough.
If there is a choice between a bitter pill and a sweet candy, the choice in favor of the latter is quite obvious.
Such thoughts are not even always conscious - we just feel better in our souls from the fact that we are sitting in the park, drinking coffee and the sun warms us. At this moment, we are happy. And it's great to feel it, to find in yourself the ability to enjoy the little things. But. The problems with which we come to therapy are almost never cured either by the sun, or by warm weather, or even by the sea. As an auxiliary thing - yes, fine. But this is not a panacea for our injuries, resentments, patterns. It turns out that we are treating the symptoms, not the disease. And somewhere out there, inside, it continues to slowly eat us. Leaving therapy at such a moment is like not healing your throat and eating ice cream - a new wave, much stronger than the previous one, can cover.
Therefore, I urge clients to be more conscious about visiting a psychologist. No one will be able to prevent you from stopping therapy, and sometimes it will not be superfluous to pause and rest a little. It is good if the psychologist warns you about the possible traps of summer mood, and even better - if you ask yourself how, in his opinion, you are ready for a break or the end of therapy. Think well, imagine, but if there was a different weather, a different mood, the problems would be solved? Or has everything remained the same? How developed is your request and do you feel good, lasting changes that are not subject to mood, people, seasons?
Love yourself, be attentive to your needs and desires and enjoy the summer - it may not solve all problems, but undoubtedly helps on the way to solving them.
