When grandfather began to grow decrepit, he got a cat. It was surprising, because any cat brought into the house was met with hostility by the grandfather.

Grandfather, limped on two crutches. He moaned softly and swore at his two unhealed fractures, and slowly made his way through the corner of the yard. Heaps of construction waste, deposits of once valuable things were a trap for his unstable legs. In the cubbyhole behind the shed was another low shed - an indistinct structure knocked down from old planks. For a hundred years, its roof sagged and slid down, about the waist of an adult.

There, on the roof of the grandfather, the Cat was waiting. The cat was black and white and very thin. Disproportionately long legs and a narrow band of black shabby tail. Apparently the Cat was young, only because of the haggard appearance it was difficult to understand.

The cat was hiding from everyone except Grandfather. He went out to Grandfather slowly and carefully, silently opening his pink mouth and further was silent. He looked at Grandfather, Grandfather looked at the Cat. Then Grandfather put one crutch to the side, checked that the crutch was stable, pulled a slice of rye bread out of his pocket, and threw it to Kotu. The cat dragged the bread by the chimney and there eagerly tore a chunk into pieces and swallowed it. Then he went to Grandfather closer and they were silent and looked at each other.

Grandmother shouted at Grandfather and chased the Cat, or rather, she ran to the place where the cat had been before and screamed there, splashing water. Grandfather was sad, but his strange friendship with the Cat continued anyway.

When the slippery snow fell, Grandfather stopped going outside. He entrusted me with the duty of feeding the Cat. But at the first attempt to approach the cat escaped, the bread remained intact.

- Do not rush, go slowly to the Cat, - my grandfather taught me, - the cat is still young, but he suffered, does not trust anyone. Approach him slowly, then stand still and do nothing. The Cat does not believe in good either. Give him time to accept you as a friend. And only if the Cat believes that you are not doing bad, he can come. Be patient, trust slowly grows and breaks in a second.

Indeed, after a while, the cat began to grab a piece of bread from me. It was still impossible to stroke him. For days he sat and waited. He sat on cold sheet metal or on the snow trampled down by his paws.

- It hurts him, - explained the grandfather, - but he endures. He is used to pain and does not show anything from the outside.

When Grandfather took to his bed completely and his skin became gray and immobile-wax, the Cat began to come and sit on the windowsill outside. Grandmother screamed, splashed water at Kota, poked him with a mop. The cat curled up into a black-muddy wet rag and looked at grandmother without blinking. One day a tear flowed from his wolfish yellow eyes. Maybe it was the water that grandmother generously poured into the Cat, I don't know, but grandmother stopped screaming and opened the window.

- Go already Herod, such a dirty trick, go to your Grandfather warm yourself, - she said. As soon as she walked away, the Cat dived through the window and huddled under Grandfather's bed.

So he took root in the house. He lived on the bed, ate on a chair near the bed and jumped into the window for a walk. The kilogram gradually broke up to six. The skinny long legs and tail became proportional. It turns out that he was a big cat, only very thin.

After the death of Grandfather, the Cat became decrepit and weakened. He just basked in the sun in the place where his grandfather first fed him. He didn't outlive his master much.

Now, in the days of warm and sunny autumn, I sit and think. How traumatic was Grandfather himself and how much he transferred his advice from his character. His advice helped me in psychotherapy sessions. For me, this is forever about trust and love.
