"Greed for money, if it is insatiable, is much more burdensome than need, because the more desires grow, the more needs they generate."
Democritus
Greed is the desire to capture and hold on to everything that causes desire. Greed, like envy, is a feeling and quality of personality condemned in our society. As a result, most people are not aware of their greed, and if they are pointed out to them, they feel insulted.
Most often, the following mechanisms are used to hide greed from oneself:
- Projection - "Everything around is stealing, I still, in comparison with the rest, take a modest one"
- Rationalization - "Now there is a crisis, you have to deal with money very carefully"
- Denial - "I would help, willingly help people, but this person is probably lying, and will squander my money"
In greed, two components (or two options) can be distinguished, if we try to consider from the position of Freud, then we have:
1 - greed - oral desire to have (absorb, consume)
2 - stinginess - anal desire to have (hold, accumulate)
What is the difference between greed and stinginess? If greed shouts: "Give me everything and more!" Stinginess has much less grabbing energy, it focuses on holding. As an example, if you break away from your relationship with money, you can be greedy for compliments, or you can be stingy with praise.
Greed, when it is hypertrophied, can push a person to terrible deeds, crimes, in the end, the only thing that interests the miser is the accumulated material wealth. Constant dissatisfaction leads to irritability, gloominess. The fear of losing what has been accumulated provokes suspicion, including towards loved ones. Emotionally, a person also becomes greedy, secretive, often indifferent to loved ones.
Greed, of course, poisons the life of a person and his family. But it is also difficult to build a harmonious life without thrift and avarice at all, or let's put it another way - socially acceptable - without frugality and the desire to earn money.
The origins of greed lie in infancy and early childhood, the eternal feeling of deprivation is associated with the child's dissatisfaction with the mother. Perhaps the baby did not receive enough milk on time (as a synonym for mother's love), so as to let go of the breast well-fed, contented and happy. The child lacked the love and care of the mother, he did not feel valuable and dear.
Also, a passion for hoarding, an obsession with consumption can compensate for other unmet needs. Feeling an emptiness inside, dissatisfaction with his life, a person tries to fill the space with various things, to prove to himself that he has achieved a lot, and everything is going well. It is also based on lowered self-esteem and basic anxiety, and material goods give a sense of security and success. Parental patterns of behavior play an important role in the formation of greed.
It is important to remember in the work that when greed is completely repressed, then it turns into its opposite - over altruism. Such people, sometimes they are called silversmiths, are ready to give out everything to others, fulfill any request, easily refuse what they deserve. Such people seem to be afraid to desire anything at all, as they are afraid of pain in case of disappointment.
Greed is a very resourceful and important feeling. Here and the ability to say "no", defending their boundaries. After all, it is very important to look and decide for yourself whether you want to share or give something of your own with this person in a given situation. And have the internal permission to defend your territory and your resources when you don't want to share. Also, greed contains energy for achieving goals, fighting competitors, willingness to take risks. Understanding yourself, honest recognition of yourself in your greed, recognition of this trait is already a resource. You do not need to spend a lot of energy to cover up impartial feelings and qualities of your personality. When a person realizes that he is being greedy, he has a conscious choice: to be greedy or to show generosity.
In the end, I would like to wish readers a balance between generosity and greed, acceptance and understanding of all the traits of their personality.
