On the way home after work Stanislav, driving along the forest, decided to stop and walk. It was a warm summer evening and he did not want to deny himself such an opportunity.
Walking into the depths of the forest, he noticed an anthill. Stopping, Stanislav thought about how the system of interactions among ants works? Sitting on a fallen tree that was nearby, he began to remember the functions that each ant performs in its "house".
Among them are the queen that rules, worker ants, nanny ants, guards, builders, scouts. Everyone is engaged in the business that he began to perform from the very beginning of his existence. As far as he remembered, if the ant did not cope with its duties, its relatives would kill it. Thus, the system of the viability of the anthill was maintained.
“It seems that the ants do not think,” Stanislav continued to reflect, “why do they occupy this particular place in their“house”?
For example, what place do I occupy in my family? What am I born for? Mom said that they wanted to do this with my father. There was a daughter, they wanted another child, and so I was born. I still do not understand: why was I born?
Now I do my own thing, earn a living for myself and my family. I found the place in society that I wanted, and arranged it for myself, getting what I want.
I wonder if this is my will of choice or are things like in an anthill? Was this place predetermined for me? No, I like what I do, and I don’t want to do anything else. Or do I think so, deceiving myself that I chose this place myself?
After all, all businessmen cannot be. Then who will provide the business? Who will work in it? If everyone becomes president, which country and whom to rule? A country of presidents? Or a society of academics. It would be fun. Some academician would have to go to the fields, and another to the plant to the machine, the third to become a sewer. Otherwise, society will die out.
Then, in order to maintain the life of the society itself, a person takes the place that will promise survival to the whole species. Someone can be the leader of the country, and he is quite stable in this position, someone - to own his own company, and someone - to work in this company, and so on.
But the question remains: is this a deliberate choice or a pseudo-deliberate one? Does a person occupying a certain position do it at will, or is he there in order to maintain a balance in the system, passing it off as his own desire? How much does my life belong to me? And what to do with loyalty in relation to different types of activities that people are engaged in?
There is hardly anyone who wants to agree that he is mistaken about his freedom of choice, that all his actions are only a representation of his will, and his whole life is intended to preserve the society in which he is.
I certainly do not want to consider myself weak-willed. This is scary. I think I own my life by doing deliberate actions that ultimately turn out to be the product of a living system.
Yes, something I am carried away, it is already getting dark, it's time to go home."
Looking at the anthill, Stanislav got up and walked towards the road, where he left the car. These reflections haunted him. He had a desire to share his thoughts on this with someone. But with whom, he has not yet found …
