This allows me to get acquainted with the images of the collective unconscious of ordinary Nizhny Novgorod residents without regularly sitting on local forums or referring to nonsense feeds of social networks. Recently, the archetype of the Russian folk trinity (Santa Claus, Snow Maiden and Snowman) reigned in the imagination of my clients. Let's talk about them. The question: "Who are the mother and father of the Snow Maiden, granddaughter of Santa Claus?" - regularly visits children and adults.

But the answer to it cannot be found in children's books. I will try to reveal to you the veil of this dark secret of the Slavic pantheon of deities. Ethically, they were no better than their Greek relatives. Murders, treason, incest are practically obligatory features of the pagan "divine" genealogy. Santa Claus is a relatively new character that appeared in the folklore of Russian citizens 200 years ago. Prior to that, he was revered exclusively in the countryside, where he had the habit of coming to visit, along with the ghosts of dead relatives, exclusively to Dyady and fed him with memorial food (kutya).

Its connection with the cult of death is obvious. But he himself is not the god of death, although you can get to him by throwing yourself into a well. In fact, this is the ancient god of the Slavs Veles. Veles, with his strange set of flock in the form of shepherds, merchants, thieves and magi, was rather a Slavic Hermes, a divine Psychopomp or a guide.

Indeed, in the original Indo-European myth, there was an afterlife shepherd who grazed the souls of the dead. Veles did about the same. This issue was investigated in some detail by B. Uspensky in his philological research in the field of Slavic antiquities "The relics of paganism in the East Slavic cult of Nicholas of Mirlikisky". So our Slavic Odin settled comfortably in the place of Santa Claus. And from the old habits of Charon, he left the habit of asking the children, "Did you behave well last year?"

His wife was the goddess Mara or Morana. In every city we still have Maryina groves dedicated to her near cemeteries. Well, the snow woman that children sculpt every winter is nothing more than her idol. Take a closer look at the outlines of her figure. How does it differ from the steppe stone women and other Paleolithic Venuses? Modern dolboslavs like to portray her exclusively as the Goddess of Death, a kind of Snow Queen. Although it is obvious that her image is much more multifaceted. She was responsible not only for death, but for fertility and eternal life.

By the very word of Moran, the Western Slavs call the effigy of Winter, which is burned in the spring. We call this scarecrow the Russian word Kostroma, akin to the word “fire”. The effigy of Morana (the annoying Winter-Morena, Kostroma) was burned at the Komoeditsa festival on the Day of the vernal equinox, when the weak winter sun turned into a stronger spring sun and an astronomical spring began on the entire planet.

Yes, yes, the one who loved to ride a horse, like his West Slavic uncles Svyatovit, Radogast and Troyan. Because of this habit of wandering, he was called Koschey. Mara is a tempter who distracts people from spiritual practices by making earthly life attractive or presenting negative for positive.

In the West, he appears in the form of the terrible snowman Snowman. Apparently, because of this diversity, they will begin to confuse him with one of the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse, with a real Plague on a white horse.

In Russia he is bony. And philologists are still arguing, because of his bony or because of the Turkic "kosh", koshchey also means a prisoner.

This is how one fairy tale begins, and it is rather unpleasant for Koshchei. He is held captive by the Amazon, Marya-Morevna, who surrounded Ivan Tsarevich after the death of Ivanushka's parents. After a while, the steppe warrior drives off and punishes her spouse: "Go everywhere, look after everything; only you cannot look into this closet," otherwise "it will be bad for us." But Ivan Tsarevich did not obey, opened the closet, and there is Koschey the Immortal hanging there, chained on twelve chains. After drinking three buckets of water brought to him by Ivan Tsarevich, Koschey breaks 12 chains and frees himself from the dungeon. At the same time, he kidnaps his wife herself.

Ivan Tsarevich decides to return her, and several times frees from Koschey's captivity, but Koschey all the time overtakes him on his magic swift horse. Twice he spares Ivan (because he helped him), the third time he kills. However, the sons-in-law revive Ivan and give him good advice: to get a magic horse. When Ivan has the same magic horse as Koshchei, they meet in a duel, Ivan kills Koshchei and frees his wife.

Who is this girl? Perhaps the wife of Perun, the goddess of love Lelia. True, it is now customary to doubt its very existence in the myths of the ancient Slavs.

First, as in the case of her mother Lada, it is necessary to decide the question of the masculine or feminine nature of this character. A. N. Ostrovsky and N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, with their "Snow Maiden", convinced the public that Lel was a young man, but this is just as far from the truth as the transformation of the Berendey nomads into archaic Slavs. A number of records speak of Lele (Lele) in the feminine gender. Especially indicative is the ritual-game "Lyalnik", dedicated only to this character and described in detail by Famintsynsh. The rite was observed among the Ukrainians and Belarusians of the southwestern region of Russia. It was held on the eve of St. George's Day, April 22; these days were called "red hill", which differed from the usual name "red hill" of Fomin, after Easter week. If before the ancient Shrovetide, when the vernal equinox was established in nature and the sun conquered winter, people "called out spring", invited her, then on the Yuryev days, when the first grass appeared, when the trees were blooming, it was already possible to celebrate the arrival of spring, its tangible presence … This spring festival of "primavera", the first greenery, is indeed very reminiscent of the ancient Eleusinian mysteries associated with the spring return of Persephone.

Persephone-Cora - daughter of Demeter; the middle name emphasizes the childish, youthful character of the spring goddess. Let me remind you that the anonymous Russian author of the 17th century, whose work was used by Gisel, directly calls Lada the mother of Lel and Polel. In this indication of Lada's motherhood, the author apparently relied only on contemporary ethnographic material, since he has no parallels with ancient mythology and he does not mention either Ceres or Proserpina, which the Polish authors did. The masculine gender of Lada's children is also conditional.

Lada's motherhood is evident also from those songs where, when calling the spring to her, Lada, they turn for permission: "Bless, mother Lado, call the spring!" The Russian ethnographer of the 17th century. there was every reason to consider Lada a mother.

The daughter essence of Leli-Lyali is evident from a number of words close to this mythological name: "lyalya", "lyalka" - a child, a child, a doll, a toy; "cherish" - to carefully carry the child; "cradle" - a baby cradle; "Leleka" is a stork with whom the belief that he brings children is associated, and much more. "Lelia", "Lyalya" could be almost a common name for "daughter", just as Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, was called simply "Cora", that is, also "daughter". Lada or Didi-Lada (Great Lada?) Combines spring agrarian rituals with marriage rituals.

In most cases, the name of Lada is accompanied by additional words, behind which, according to medieval authors, there are special deities, due to which they require special consideration.

Known combinations: Did-Lada (variant Divo-Lada), Mati-Lada, Lel, Lel-Polel; medieval sources add a mysterious name, which in Latin transcription looks like Iassa or Iesse, where the doubling of s should correspond to the Slavic hissing.

Therefore, phonetically it should look something like "Yasha" ("Yazha") or "Yeshe" ("Hedgehog"). There are some data that allow us to get closer to the disclosure of meaning. The fact is that in Poland, Belarus and Ukraine there were legends about snakes, which, having lived twice for seven years, turned into special bloodthirsty creatures called "smoky" in Polish and "yazhi" in Ukrainian. K. Moshinsky himself wrote down such a legend about "jaze" devouring people. There are especially many such legends in the vicinity of Krakow and in Krakow itself.

Do you understand who the mysterious Yozhin s Bazhin from the famous Czech song is? Well, we can also remember the snake in which Kashchei turns.

It's time to recall the name of the wife of Ivan Tsarevich in the famous fairy tale. And her name is Marya Morevna. Daughter of the sea king? How is it.

V. V. Ivanov and V. N. Toporov associate the name of Marena with the name of the Roman god of war Mars, who originally also had agrarian functions, restoring the common ancestral form * Mǒr- (assuming that later, perhaps, there was a confusion - in the spirit of folk etymology, - roots * Mǒr- and * mer-, "death", as a result of which the deity of fertility began to be associated with death, but from the goddess of fertility and harvest she had a sickle or scythe.

So what does it do? The brother kidnapped his sister, and even persuaded her to a forbidden relationship. And its fruits were destroyed. An analysis of the plot of this famous tale from childhood convinced me that Perun was a dying and resurrecting god stronger than Lev Klein's entire study "The Resurrection of Perun". In the original myth, the betrayal of the wife of God was also accompanied by the death of the fruits of betrayal as a result of the wrath of God. But the real heir was later resurrected.

Something similar is happening with the Snow Maiden. First, she is reborn in Ostrovsky's opera somewhere in the Kostroma province. And then, when a bulldozer named after Pelevin cleans angels from Santa Claus's retinue, the role of an angel or a demon goes to the Snow Maiden. This happens in 1937 at the Kremlin Christmas tree.
