When people ask me what the feeling of happiness depends on, I want to say that, first of all, it depends on hormones. Biologically, it consists of 4 substances: oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin and endorphin. Whatever one may say, but the chemical processes inside a person determine not only his behavior, but also the perception of the surrounding reality.

Endorphin is a pain-relieving hormone. He, as a rule, goes in conjunction with adrenaline and helps extreme enthusiasts to jump further, do more, lift heavy and do the impossible.

Oxytocin is a hormone of love and quiet family joys. He makes our hearts melt at the sight of a kitten, child or loved one. It is also called the attachment hormone.

Dopamine provides a burst of joy when we get what we want. It provides a sense of satisfaction when we reward ourselves for a good job or study with a delicious meal or a pleasant purchase.

Serotonin works as an internal antidepressant and is responsible for good mood. Violation of its production or retention mechanism leads to serious consequences, including depression, which must be treated by a specialist. By the way, serotonin is produced during movement and physical exertion, so for the sake of happiness it is worth walking, dancing and playing sports.

Despite the popular myth, money, alas, does not make us happy. I believe that many people take material well-being for happiness, which undoubtedly gives a feeling of comfort and security. But in fact, health is of much greater value. It's a pity, only the one who lost it understands this.

Despite a perfectly logical explanation in terms of chemical processes, you can hardly find a more subjective feeling than the feeling of happiness. It seems to me, first of all, happiness is when opportunities coincide with needs. Inside everyone there is a certain ideal image of oneself, one's family, work, lifestyle, relationships with others. When the picture matches reality, the person says he is happy. When reality falls short of the desired ideal, responses arise. Someone begins to strive for a goal and make efforts, while someone loses interest and turns either into a skeptic or into a gloomy unhappy loser. Who to be and what to do - everyone decides for himself.

How to allow yourself to be happy?

No matter how trite it sounds, listen to yourself and your needs, separate your own desires from the imposed ones, stop living under the yoke of stereotypes and find out what is really important to you. A lot comes from childhood - trauma, complexes, fears. When a person realizes that he has already grown up, nothing prevents him from starting to live in a new way and be happy. Of course, personal therapy makes this process smoother and more short-lived, but nothing prevents you from taking the exciting journey of happiness through self-discovery on your own.

What is happiness for you?
