The school year has begun and many families with school-age children are faced with such a serious problem as school neurosis.
School neurosis is far from new, but it still affects millions of schoolchildren.
Signs of school neurosis:
- very strong reluctance of the child to go to school
- frequent colds
- anxiety
- poor academic performance
- increased fatigue
- absent-mindedness, inability to hold attention for a long time on something
- dysphoria (persistent decreased emotional state)
- irritability
- psychosomatic manifestations (headaches, nausea, various other pains)
- bad dream.
Some of these signs can be caused by other diseases, vitamin deficiency, etc., but, as you know, our psyche and body are in very close unity with each other, and it is not always clear - some kind of somatic disease causes a decrease in the emotional background, a painful condition, a deterioration in psychological well-being, or, conversely, anxiety, tension, resentment against the teacher, other negative emotions that the student experiences, cause him to get sick.
What are the causes of school neurosis? They are very diverse:
Conflicts and difficulties of adaptation in the children's team
Not all children, senior schoolchildren manage to establish good, trusting and friendly relations in the school team. Now they write a lot about bullying - school bullying of some children, but, in addition to bullying itself, there are other problems: manifestations of open aggression, rejection (refusal of friendly communication, refusal to be included in a peer group). All these problems and difficulties can be very difficult for a child to experience, lead to fear of school, unwillingness to go there, to meet with classmates, and ultimately to school neurosis.
Conflicts with teachers
Another difficult problem that schoolchildren often face. Teachers are also people and, unfortunately, not all of them have enough patience, professionalism, respect for the personality of the child in order to effectively and painlessly for the student resolve communication difficulties, conflicts, remain objective about the child's progress, not divide the class into “favorites "and" outcast ". The student may also face manifestations of emotional abuse from the teacher.
All this also does not make the school an attractive place. Unwillingness to go to the subject of a particular teacher, to teach his subject, to receive another grade in this subject can also generate a child's protest against school, reluctance to go to lessons, skipping lessons (sometimes "pulling" psychosomatics here - to justify this omission).
Academic failure
The poor grades a child gets at school also doesn't add to the enjoyment of attending school. A bad grade is humiliation, a student feels humiliated in front of his classmates, fears that he will have to somehow make excuses to his parents.
Bad grades lead to decreased mood, unwillingness to study. A vicious circle arises: low grade - bad mood and unwillingness to learn - low grade. There may even be a kind of "intellectual stupidity" - despite the fact that the child, in principle, is able to solve, for example, a mathematical problem, the expectation of failure, resentment against teachers, parents and school seem to "slow down" him, do not allow the intellectual process to start, "Turn on" thinking to solve the problem. This is also a manifestation of school neurosis.
Exams, USE
Fear of exams, especially the USE, overestimated parental expectations, tutors, stress due to the high responsibility for the failure of the exam - all this requires a separate big conversation. Let's just note that we are talking about fear - fear of failure, fear of disappointing parents (and therefore losing their love), fear of losing face, including before oneself. It is also the fact that these fears in many schoolchildren create colossal tension and, as a result, numerous manifestations of school neurosis.
Thus, we see that a child at school is often in a state of chronic stress, experiences a lot of negative emotions. Due to the fact that he cannot cope with them, live and respond to these emotions, he cannot cope with the resolution of school conflicts, as well as conflicts with parents about school - he may begin school neurosis or some of its individual manifestations. The quality of life of a child is greatly reduced, instead of enjoying and joyful out of life, living the school years as a "bright time", he is depressed and suffering.
Of course, the help of parents is indispensable here. It is very good if they help the child cope with school stress, they can support the child with poor grades and other difficulties. However, something is often lacking: either time, or specific parental competence in these matters, or something else.
And then the way out, help to eliminate school neurosis, return the child to a positive emotional state, improve his academic performance is the help of a specialist - a psychologist. A competent child or adolescent psychologist will help the student to deal with their emotions, resolve school conflicts with peers and teachers, and establish mutual understanding between the child himself and his parents. The result of working with a psychologist should be a decrease in the child's anxiety, an improvement in his well-being, and an increase in academic performance.
It is not always that just the help of a psychologist is enough to improve academic performance, sometimes a tutor is needed, but the help of a psychologist is extremely important here.
So, my recommendation to all parents is that if you notice signs of school neurosis in a child, then do not hesitate to contact a specialist. Find a good, competent counselor, talk to him about how he can help you and your child cope with these problems, and let him help you.

School Neurosis In Parents
School must be survived (c) If a person has children, and even more so, children of school age, then life is subordinated to the school routine. And for such people, September 1st is not the beginning of a new month, not the beginning of autumn, but the beginning of a new school year.
