Inattentive child. What to do?
Problems with concentration of attention in a child most often become noticeable by the age of 5-6, when preparation for school and the first grade begins. It is difficult for a child to sit at the table, listen to and complete tasks, he interrupts, tells something of his own, gets indignant and runs away, turns on a chair and slides under the table, makes ridiculous mistakes … And parents do not sit idly by, but do various exercises for development of arbitrariness, turn to specialists. But the changes are minimal. Then the adult grows irritated, sometimes growing into helplessness and despair.
What happens to the child?
If it is difficult for a child to concentrate on performing educational activities, perhaps his attention, his mental strength is directed to cope with some difficult inner experiences that cannot be mastered alone. And there can be a whole variety of reasons causing them. This is jealousy of younger brothers and sisters, and fear caused by quarrels between parents and self-accusations, helplessness in connection with the divorce of parents, and anger, powerlessness caused by difficulties in relationships with a teacher or children, and a feeling of loneliness and failure, and fear not confirm parental expectations; and more. Until we understand the reason for what is happening to the child, all the methods we use to develop attention, encouragement and sanctions, persuasion and agreement will be ineffective.
How to be for us, parents, how to find that reason?
First of all, become attentive to the emotional world of the child. Pay attention not only to what he says or not, but also to what he is experiencing. And, of course, to establish confidential communication: to talk with the child, what he thinks, what is happening in his life, what worries. A lot about your child's experiences can be told by his play and drawings. Most likely, it will take time for the baby to begin to trust you, to believe in your sincere non-judgmental interest and respect for his inner world.
