What do you know about depression? How do you know if you have depression? Do you really understand the meaning of this definition or are you characterizing your bad mood in this way? Today I want to tell you about the danger of this condition and its pitfalls. What can be done to avoid depression, or if it has already "captured you", how to get out of it? First, let's define what depression is. Depression Is a mental disorder characterized by a negative emotional background, low self-esteem, low level of motivation, passive behavior, impaired cognitive functions (memory, attention, thinking) are also inherent in this state.
What signs can tell you that you are depressed?? There are several of them:
- Apathetic state;
- increased tearfulness;
- a sharp decline in interests;
- jumps in weight (4-5%) of the total mass (this can be either a decrease or an increase in kg);
- sleep disturbance;
- suicidal thoughts;
- feelings of guilt and helplessness;
- increased fatigue and loss of strength;
- decrease in cognitive functions;
- anhedonia (loss of the ability to have fun).
It should be noted that with depression, you must have at least 5 signs, while its duration is at least two weeks. It is common at this stage that people ignore their condition, which carries with it a series of negative consequences. Namely: the destruction of marriages, various kinds of diseases, job loss, loss of oneself as a person, and much more. There are several types of depression, I will not stipulate everything, but I will describe the most common.
- Seasonal. It proceeds seasonally with climate change, more often in autumn or winter. Usually, when the season ends, people resume normal functioning again;
- Atypical. It is characterized by hypersensitivity and mood swings, overeating, drowsiness and panic attacks.
- Brief depressive disorder is a milder version of depression, more often affecting young people and characterized by short depressive episodes lasting less than 2 weeks.
- Psychotic or delusional depression - a special form of a depressive psychotic episode, which is inherent in psychosis. Psychosis is a condition in which people see or hear things that do not exist (hallucinations) and / or have false ideas or beliefs (delusions). There are different types of delusions, such as self-blame for no reason (delusions of guilt), financial ruin (delusions of poverty), feelings of incomprehensible illness (hypochondriacal delusions).
- The most common and typical form depression is a depressive episode. An episode lasts from several weeks to a year, but always more than 2 weeks in duration. A single depressive episode is called unipolar. Approximately one third of people who get sick experience only one episode or "phase" in their lifetime. However, if a person does not receive appropriate treatment for depression, there is a risk of recurrent depressive episodes in the future. Depressive episodes always, to one degree or another, affect a person's performance.
- Dysthymia - the disorder is permanent, the symptoms last much longer, at least 2 years, sometimes decades, therefore it is called "chronic depression". This disorder affects a person's performance.
Why did I describe this? First of all, to explain that different types of depression require different tools of work. What works well in one case is ineffective in another. If a vacation, taking vitamin D, a good sleep, a pleasant pastime, a new hobby, new acquaintances, etc. can help with seasonal, atypical depression, a brief depressive disorder, then for others it is better to consult a psychologist.
Now consider causes of occurrence depression. First of all, it is a violation of self-esteem and self-esteem, in which a person has a certain idea of his own “I” as unworthy of love and respect. For example, if a person's life and activity are aimed at confirming a good attitude towards themselves, depression of exhaustion sets in.
The second cause of depression is traumatic situations, such as breaking up with a loved one, losing a job, or the death of a loved one.
And the third reason is genetic predisposition. It occurs due to a violation of the metabolism of neurotransmitters, special substances in the brain. Neurotransmitters are responsible for the transmission of nerve impulses, as well as for the coordinated work of the processes of excitation and inhibition in the brain.
At the end, I want to summarize. Please do not ignore your state of mind, as the price of reckoning will be very high! Good mental health is the key to good health, harmonious relationships, high work capacity and a beautiful appearance. Remember this. I hope the article was helpful to you.
