Very often I hear responses from different people about psychology as a science and psychotherapy as a process. Unimportant, I tell you, responses. And if psychology as a science is still somehow perceived - well, simply because research is being conducted that is mathematically confirmed, etc

Those. there are some factors that make it possible to give psychology such a seriousness and "weight". That about psychotherapy, most often people do not understand anything at all - after all, there is nothing to "touch" in it and nothing special to see - after all, the greatest work takes place inside a person. And then, until you try it on yourself, nothing is clear at all - just some kind of mysticism, phantasmagoria, and in general - “all this your psychotherapy is complete nonsense” - these are the words I hear very often.

Well, I do not set myself the goal of overpersuading someone. I’ll just tell you about a beautiful, in my opinion, metaphor that has recently “flown” into my head quite unexpectedly. Maybe someone will find it useful or interesting - who knows.

So that's it. For about a year or two, I did not play sports at all. Well, to put it mildly, it got out of shape a little. After taking a critical look at myself in the fall and sighing a little over my jeans, which I no longer fit, I made a strong-willed effort to say “Yes” to the sport again. So, a half-year card to the nearest fitness club was bought - let's go, as they say. And now, after a week of hard training, when the muscles had already gotten used to it a little and did not occupy all my attention entirely (well, because it was difficult to get used to it - my legs were shaking, and my arms were shaking, and in general everything hurts), I finally I was able to look around and observe the training process. And, by the way, I attend various classes. Completely different in terms of load, pace, specificity, and group and individual. But … I observed the same structure in all these activities.

First, there is a warm-up, the task of which is to warm up and stretch the muscles. Then some intense action, for the sake of which, in fact, the training is started. And at the end, strained and tired muscles get their "relaxation" - as a rule, at the end of each workout we stretch, stretch, release tension.

This structure is not accidental. It maximizes the effect of training and prevents damage to our body - muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc. such a structure is aimed at ensuring that the trainees get the desired effect, while still being gentle to their body. And, in general, this is physiologically and scientifically substantiated and confirmed. And it is completely natural for the body - natural-careful, I would say.

But why am I all this? Oh yes, about psychotherapy. Now look. We are not only made of muscles, bones, ligaments and other things. Each of us has emotions, thoughts, needs, meanings, some intentions - but a lot of things in fact. And despite the fact that all these things are intangible, they do not cease to be a part of our organism, our body, our psyche. Imagine for a second, literally for a moment, that all these things like muscles, ligaments, fasciae and other quite tangible parts of our body. And then the process of psychotherapy becomes clear and understandable, natural in nature. And very similar in structure to sports. Whether it is a group psychotherapy meeting or a session in individual counseling - just like sports training, they have their own clear structure.

For example, we - psychodramatists - are:

- warming up - the task of which is to “warm up” feelings, emotions, meanings, and prepare the client for work.

- action - actually working with the client.

- sharing - a sensual response, one might even say a kind of "discharge" of emotional stress, a kind of stretching for "emotional muscles", assimilation of the experience gained during the action.

Like this. Everything happens according to the same laws as in sports, as well as in working with the body. And if you take a closer look at any activity, absolutely any - it will have approximately the same structure - well, if we are talking about the activity that is still aimed at achieving the desired result with the utmost care for oneself.

Can psychotherapy be called a sport for the soul? I think that in terms of improving the quality of life - you can! After all, we go in for sports to put our bodies in order, to feel better, to live more fully. And the soul, the psyche - although it is not visible so immediately, but it can hurt much stronger than the body. And sometimes, in order to live, manage your life and enjoy it, you need to put your soul in order. Therefore - yes - psychotherapy can be safely called a sport for the soul.

And, probably, the last remark to this text. Many may ask the question - is it really necessary psychotherapist or psychologistto put your soul in order? The answer here is unequivocal - yes, I need it. Again, I will give an analogy with sports. You can, of course, go in for sports on your own, without the help of a trainer or a leader of a fitness group, but there is no guarantee that this will be useful and will allow you to achieve the desired effect. After all, the trainer helps to develop an individual program for you, covering all your individual characteristics, and also makes sure that when performing exercises you do them so that you can achieve what you want, and at the same time do not damage your body. Again, from my experience I know that improper performance of sports exercises can either lead to the fact that completely different muscle groups are involved - completely not the ones that I need. Or, even worse - to a sports injury - which also happened to me more than once in the absence of a coach.

Also psychotherapist or psychologist, like a sports coach, it helps to put the soul in order. Creates such conditions so that the changes necessary for this particular client become possible. And it helps to do it as carefully and safely as possible. In an amicable way, you can, of course, reflect on your own, without resorting to the help of a psychotherapist, but what results will this lead to? Dont clear. Absolutely. As well as how safe it will be.

And finally, I want to note that in psychotherapy just like in sports, the possibility of change can happen only if the person (client) wants and is willing to do a lot for this.

So - in the usual words about the usual process. And no mysticism and phantasmagoria.

Friends, live life to the fullest and have fun! Go in for sports, love yourself, take care of yourself and do not forget about your soul - it is an integral and very important part of you.
