An addict sees the world through the prism of his illusions. These can be fears, stereotypes of behavior, dictated by the drug. There is a distortion of reality - spiritual values are replaced, there is only one desire - to take a dose. For relatives it is not clear how their son (daughter, sister, brother, father, mother, etc.) does not hear what they say words of love: "Stop, please", "You can handle", "You promised.", "Look what you've done." This list of phrases is endless. But, unfortunately, the addicted person does not hear them. The drug dictates different conditions, a different perception of reality. Let's try to look through the eyes of a dependent person at his illusions.
- the first illusion is the denial of addiction. It is difficult for an addict to admit his addiction. He truly believes that he is drug-free and confirms this with periods of abstinence, finding various excuses to justify his breakdowns.
- the second illusion - the accusation - "it's not me who is to blame, but someone else." At these moments, the addict operates with phrases: "Look what you did (a)", "If it were not for you ….". Shifts responsibility for his life to another person.
- the third illusion is justification. Shifting responsibility for use on various life circumstances. This can be stress at work, disrespect for family members, difficulties in communication, excessive fatigue, a desire to “enjoy youth”. Addicted person's projections can also be added to this category.
- the fourth illusion is fantasy. A drug addict or alcoholic loves to talk about future achievements. They haven't happened yet, but the descriptions are colorful, almost real. They talk with a serious air, and so I want to believe them. Most importantly, the fantasy does not mention drugs. He says that the surrounding circumstances change, drugs miraculously disappear and the addict becomes almost a superhero.
- the fifth illusion is to divert attention from the very process of using. At such moments, the topic of conversation changes. It is about everything, except for those actions that relate to drugs.
- the sixth illusion is the understatement of use. This is a fairy tale about measure. Unfortunately, the addicted person does not know the measure. It’s never enough for him. The consequence of this is that he recalls all past events from a positive point of view. It is difficult for him to perceive the pain he inflicted while intoxicated. He just pushed it out of his memory.
- the seventh illusion is the illusion of control. This is the most difficult illusion to realize, not only for the addict, but also for his relatives. Everyone knows the phrase: "Pull yourself together." This is impossible for a drug addict. Addiction is a disease. And if you fell into her network, there is only one way out - to seek help from those who are competent in this matter.
An addicted person will not be able to hear their relatives and friends. And this does not mean that he does not want to hear them. He just sees the world through the illusions that the drug dictated to him. And he believes in this world, believes in those illusions that I described above. For him, such a world becomes a reality.
In the process of rehabilitation, our specialists not only destroy illusions, but also teach us to perceive reality as it is. And most importantly, not only to perceive, but also to accept, to learn to live in it. The reality of life lies not in illusions, but in knowing oneself.
