Sounds funny, right? So why do we require our children to be excellent students always and in everything? Yes, of course, you want only the best for your child - hence the endless circles and tutors … but for some reason he stubbornly prefers drawing to mathematics, or vice versa, he sits up over chess or puzzles instead of playing the ball and does not know how to make friends at all. But you so want the child to be smart!

Let us then define what is meant by the mind, or intellect. Some scientists define it as the ability to effectively cope with tasks, others as the ability to adapt, learn and use abstract concepts. The general view is that intelligence is the ability to operate with some logical constructs - roughly speaking, intelligence "lives" in the head and in our representation is associated with ordered and logical thinking … But then it turns out that Usain Bolt, without solving a single problem, will be considered stupid in our society?

Psychologist Howard Gardner proposed a new vision of this paradox, creating the theory of multiple intelligences as an alternative to what he calls the "classical" view of intelligence as the ability to reason logically.

Gardner, having studied what determined the success of a person in any culture, came to the conclusion that instead of a single basic intellectual ability, there are many different intellectual abilities found in various combinations. It is the plural, different nature of intelligence that allows people to master such diverse roles as the role of a doctor, a farmer, a writer or a dancer.

He identified 6 different types of intelligence, independent of each other and acting in the brain as independent systems (or modules), each according to its own rules:

a) linguistic;

b) logical and mathematical;

c) spatial;

d) musical;

e) bodily kinesthetic and

f) personality modules.

The first three modules are familiar components of intelligence that are easy to measure with intelligence tests. The last three are no less important, and maybe even more, but for some reason they remain underestimated for our society.

Take a closer look at your child: what kind of intelligence prevails in him? Below are the key signs of each intelligence and tips on how to develop them.

Verbal intelligence - such a child, as a rule, begins to speak early enough; it is possible to invent your own language; easily remembers long sentences and sometimes phrases in a foreign language. Learns to read early.

How to develop his ability? Read to him at night; teach to borrow books from the library; ask to retell what you read.

Musical Intelligence - loves listening to sounds and playing them back. It can be not only music: beeps of cars, clatter of keys, even the noise from the washing machine. He touches musical instruments with interest, extracting sounds, and easily recognizes a repeating song.

How to develop? Sing to him, find an instrument and a teacher, take him to a music school.

Logical and mathematical intelligence - a child from childhood easily categorizes things and is able to act according to a model. Easily identifies differences and over / under ratios. Understands equivalence: for example, 60 minutes is an hour, seven days is a week, etc. He understands the rules well and can come up with his own.

You can develop this ability, starting, for example, with building with the help of bricks and laying out toys in size, and up to fairly complex games, for example, Monopoly.

Spatial intelligence - the child begins to understand perspective quite early. If the house he drew is in the shape of a cube lying on a plane - be sure that your child has a developed spatial intelligence.

This ability is easily encouraged by allocating enough paint and drawing space. After walking in an unfamiliar place, invite your child to draw a map from memory.

Bodily kinesthetic intelligence includes both the ability to control one's own movements and the ability to operate on objects. Such children are easy to distinguish: they are more graceful in dance, they fall less often, they easily learn to swim and ride a bicycle. Opened the alarm clock with a screwdriver before learning to walk? Congratulations, perhaps an engineer is growing up in your family!

Such a child should be sent to a sports club, buy a set of tools.

Intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence is perhaps the most difficult to recognize ability, which manifests itself at a later age. Such children can easily plan and take into account their abilities, and also easily recognize and interpret the emotions of other people. The child may ask, for example, why you were upset after talking on the phone. He easily recognizes lies and has a "flair" for recognizing the true motives of another person.

Develop your child by giving him the opportunity to attend groups in which he can show leadership qualities. Encourage him to communicate with others, ask him for his opinion on the character of this or that person.
