Recently I calculated the statistics: almost every second friend of mine changed his profession at least once in his life. Well, or dreamed of changing it. Moreover, today leading economists say that the world is on the verge of the Fourth Scientific and Technological Revolution. And, if many years ago, small artisans were replaced by large factories, now part of the intellectual workers will be replaced by artificial intelligence.

More and more adults are turning to me as a career counselor. Almost every one of them considers himself lonely and wrong in this career crisis. Which is not strange - after all, in the USSR it was customary to choose the "right" profession once and for all life, the state invested a lot of money in training a specialist, and then sent him to fulfill five-year plans for life.

Today, the world has changed a lot - and transitions are not unique to adolescents. And I want to share with you the concept of the stages of the so-called transition period in a career. At the end of the 20th century, Adams, Hayes and Hopson wrote about her in foreign literature. But for some reason, in our translation, I have not met her anywhere. The concept is somewhat similar to the stages of experiencing loss, but it still better describes a career crisis.

So, during a career crisis we:

1. We deny … Live the life you're so used to. Go to the office to work, work conscientiously there as an accountant from 9 to 18, drink beer with friends at the bar on Fridays, spend weekends with your family. And suddenly you start to feel sick in the morning. And only on weekdays. You go to the doctor, undergo examination and … the doctor finds nothing. You continue to feel sick more and more until finally you move on to the second stage

What to do about it? Be sensitive to yourself. Learn to listen to your own body. And understand your needs. If you are insensitive to yourself, this period can drag on for a very long time. Some clients have lived in it for 10-15 years.

2. Reacting … After a while, you begin to draw a parallel between bookkeeping and nausea. And suddenly you remember that you always dreamed of drawing. At this stage, feelings fill you. And they can be completely different. It can be delightful that you have finally found your way. Maybe anger at the very teacher who called your drawings mediocre. Or maybe even sadness - from the fact that you have wasted so much time.

What to do about it? Reside. Share with others. Feelings are difficult to deal with otherwise.

3. Feeling insecure … At this stage, doubts begin to eat you up. And also anger, sadness, longing and despair. Will I be able to retrain? What if I can't do it? What if I'm not that talented for a designer? Objectively, this is the most unpleasant stage. The most critical within a career crisis. But after it it becomes much easier.

What to do about it? Ask for support. Provide yourself with loved ones who can take care of you and support you. Take an ability assessment test, consult a design teacher. Try to appropriate what you already have to move on. Leverage your self-support resources.

4. Accept reality … The understanding comes that the past cannot be returned. Your desires have changed. Your world will no longer be the same, no matter how pathetic this phrase may sound. This stage is crucial. If you manage to direct your gaze to the future, then it is much easier further. You choose to change. If not, there is a risk of going back to insecurity and trying to live a past life that is no longer relevant.

What to do about it? Try to come to terms with the fact that there has been a change. Weigh the pros and cons . Try to see the light at the end of the tunnel. And actively begin to take an interest in the desired profession.

5. Testing … You begin to actively look for options for implementing your plans. You look for courses, come up with a cunning plan, go part-time as an accountant, study photoshop at night. Here the strength and desire to act appear, but after a series of unsuccessful attempts again there is a risk of falling into uncertainty.

What to do about it? Search for possible options. Determine for yourself the point at which you can already give up. Brainstorm (individually and in groups). Develop networking. And, again, ask for and take support.

6. Looking for meaning … Completed the courses and you got an internship at a creative agency. In the process of this difficult year-long journey, you have done a tremendous job. It remains to give it meaning and draw conclusions. For example, your friends were especially supportive, unlike your parents. And you were able to learn how to draw animation in just six months - it turns out that you are far from being as mediocre as you initially thought.

What to do about it? Take a close look at the path traveled. It is important to devote sufficient time to the search for meaning, otherwise you will lose such a large and important experience of living in a crisis. And he will still be useful to you. For example, during the next crisis.

7. We integrate … Based on your drawing talent, you may decide to go in the direction of animation in design. And based on the support received, start trusting friends more than family. At this stage, you implement the experience gained in life and correct it.

What to do about it? Just improve your quality of life and grow further. The most enjoyable stage for me.:)
