DEFECTS OF SELECTION
“The goal of psychotherapy is to help the client
feel like having a choice there, where he had previously experienced compulsion."
James Budgethal.
Psychotherapist using his sensitivity
detects client's "points of no freedom"
My psychotherapy. Experience and reflection …
Creative adaptation, being one of the central mechanisms of the functioning of a healthy productive personality and its main criterion in the Gestalt approach, is nothing more than a person's ability to choose. In turn, the inability to choose makes a person a rigid, reproductive, mental automaton and is the cause of many of his psychological problems.
A person with a working choice function acquires the ability to be the author of his life. While a person with an “inactivated” or “broken” function of choice becomes a hostage to the situation and circumstances.
I see the essence of psychotherapy in returning to the client this very ability to choose, which can extend in a wide range: from minor choices for a person to more global choices regarding his life as a whole.
It is no coincidence that I used two terms in my text to describe a non-working selection function - “inactive” and “broken”.
I believe that they are specific for clients with different levels of personality organization - neurotic and borderline (according to Nancy McWilliams). In my previous articles I described the features of such clients, calling them the client "I need" and the client "I want".
For neurotic client the organization of the personality is characterized by a "broken" function of choice. Their choice turns out to be limited (distorted) by the concept of the Other, which is overloaded in their picture of the world, and by those boundaries - limitations that the Others - real and ideal (internal objects) - set them. In this case, the concrete mechanisms of limitation are both elements of consciousness - introjects and attitudes, and some social feelings - shame, guilt, fear.
For frontier client the organization of the personality will be characterized by a "non-activated" function of choice. Their "choices" will be largely determined by the situation (field behavior). The concept of the Other, which is not formed in their picture of the world, and the deficient social feelings - shame and guilt, make their consciousness egocentric, boundless, not allowing them in a situation of choice to notice those boundaries-limitations that are inevitably associated with the presence of the Other in the life.
The client neurotic in a situation of choice chooses the Other. The borderline client in a situation of choice does not notice the Other. As a result, both of them are unable to choose and find themselves hostages of their psychological matrix - a certain picture of the World.
The psychotherapist, in the course of therapy, with the help of his own sensitivity, discovers the client's “points of lack of freedom”. As a result, the client has the opportunity to notice and realize his automatic mechanisms (introjects, attitudes, scenarios, psychological games), depriving him of the opportunity to choose and not allowing him to creatively adapt to the world. With the support of a psychotherapist in individual and / or group work, the client has a chance to try experimenting at points of automatic “overshooting” of choice, gaining new experience for himself and going beyond his matrix.

Kitchen. Evening. He and she are trying to make dinner. - What are you spreading your hands here like a fool! Get away! .. Bring it! … Give it! .. - Yes, now, don’t shout, don’t you see, I’m busy … Now I’ll come and do it. One gets the feeling that his words do not hurt her.
Codependent Pattern Of Partner Selection. Can You Choose The Good?
Once I was shocked how Tim bought shoes. He tried on, it seems, several dozen pairs. Many were "ok" but not "good." A little lighter, a little heavier, a little tighter, a little looser, a little darker, a little lighter, the laces are a little narrower, a little wider … I was quietly furious.

Partner Selection
How did you choose your partner? Being in a relationship is not easy. It is even more difficult to find someone with whom you want to be together. When choosing a partner, many of your interests are involved. What do you do, what do you want from life, how you like to spend time.
Victim Selection
This is not the first time I hear people regret that they "meet the wrong guys." I often notice comments in the style of “you have to think about who you are meeting with”. Increasingly, I observe how victims of stalking and violence are accused of some kind of secondary benefit - they say, "
