From the very beginning of August, we see on billboards and in shop windows images of children with backpacks and flowers, cheerfully walking to school. However, many students and their parents do not share the joy of advertising students. This does not mean that everything is bleak and hopeless - after all, there are old and new friends at school, interesting classes and circles and many other not boring activities … But …

Oh, this is not an easy job …

Perhaps, in September this "but" comes out on top. And it does not matter whether the child is going “for the first time to the first grade” or is already finishing school, life presents new problems for students and their parents, which are not always easy to solve. In today's world, going to school for a child and their parents is a cross-country hurdle race. Every year - new standards and requirements. Today the whole school learns according to Ivanov's textbook, tomorrow according to Petrov's textbook, and the day after tomorrow only the author Sidorov is recognized as a worthy specialist.

Even in the West, where school curricula do not undergo such random leaps in different directions, experts recognize that all parties involved in the educational process - teachers, parents and students - experience a fairly high level of stress associated with the beginning of the school year.

Blues and Panic

What makes up this stress?

Firstly, this is the "September 1st blues" - the sadness that the holidays have passed and "working days" have begun. Again lessons, again early gatherings for school, parent meetings, sections, tutors, etc. This is hard not only for the students, but also for the parents.

Children, especially primary school students, are far from always able to maintain the pace of work on their own. The brain is not yet ripe to concentrate attention for a long time on individual activities, especially if they seem boring and long to the child. So the parents have all the responsibility on their own shoulders. This not only makes you sad, but you can also panic. Therefore, it is probably even appropriate to talk about the "first September panic".

Secondly, many are visited by the "1st September alarm". How will the child cope, how will relations with teachers and classmates develop in the coming year? The uncertainty about the new school year is causing concern for children and parents.

Unbearable burden

Even in Soviet times, when the program was measured and took into account the necessary balance of study and rest of the student, there were always children for whom school life was not easy. And the current program requires complete dedication from the child. The schedule and pace of the weekly schedule can be extremely stressful and even on the verge of impossible.

Children sing and dance and paint and write weekly essays and do much more. It would seem a diversified development, what could be better? But among such a variety of general developmental activities, there is not so much time left for the necessary subjects. Teachers also "rush" in the park through the requirements of the new program, unable to devote time to the lagging student. It turns out, "I don't understand - your problems." Therefore, in addition to school activities, the child often also works with a tutor.

Children in the face of difficulties

How does the school race affect children?

  1. Overwork and burnout. Children, especially younger schoolchildren, who have to not only master new subjects, but also adapt to a new life, are not as hardy as the authors of school curricula think. Vigils on calligraphy until 2 a.m. quickly drain their physical resources. Attention and memory begin to suffer. But a decrease in the pace of study threatens that the child will lag behind the school curriculum. Therefore, parents and teachers often press harder on the child, requiring even more effort. This often leads to the fact that the student not only loses interest in learning, but also begins to feel disgust for it.
  2. School anxiety. Pressure on the student, constant reproaches from teachers and parents, as well as problems with classmates can cause a child to fear school. He may simply refuse to go there, have morning tantrums, deliberately eat and dress for a long time. Maybe even skip class. And it happens that he develops psychogenic vomiting or the temperature rises. And so every weekday. But on weekends and holidays, the student miraculously recovers.
  3. Depression. Yes, children have depression too. What to do? The child may feel incapable of a new life. Something does not work out for him, something causes laughter from classmates and censure of teachers. Even if he tries very, very hard, not all problems he can solve himself. Self-esteem falls, and so does the mood.

What can parents do?

Overwork, anxiety, depression develop when the nervous system is unable to recover from prolonged mental stress. Especially if a load of negative emotions is added to this, or if we are talking about a child diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. Of course, parents cannot influence the intensity of the school curriculum, but they can influence how it is distributed in the child's life. Therefore, the main advice is to balance the study and rest regime so that the student has time to recuperate.

In general, most of the recommendations to parents of schoolchildren are banal, but in the park of the school year, even they are overlooked, relegated to the background. After all, the main thing is that academic performance does not fall and the quarter is finished well. However, it's worth getting back to basics.

  1. One of the most important factors in solving many school problems is getting adequate sleep. A 7–10 year old child should sleep 10–11 hours. Research shows that sleep deprived children do much worse than they could with adequate rest. A tired student becomes inattentive, easily distracted, and does not remember the material well. It takes him much longer to assimilate knowledge. Sleep is part of a well-organized daily routine. However, children cannot effectively organize themselves, and parents need to teach them to do this. For children, rituals related to the daily routine are important, so that all things are in the same place and one activity is habitually alternating with another.
  2. But not only deeds and responsibilities should alternate. Have learned - have played. The child must move. And not only because children should have a fun childhood. Physical activity relieves the effects of stress well, helps you switch to topics not related to lessons, and then continue your studies with a fresh mind.
  3. If you see that your child, despite all attempts to reduce stress, is not coping with his studies, he develops depression and a negative attitude towards school, consider home education. At home, it will be much easier to create a flexible schedule, plan a schedule, and devote more time to difficult topics for the child. If you are an ardent supporter of socialization, then going to circles and sections is not prohibited. And in the older grades, when the child gets used to learning, he may well return to school and continue his education in the children's team.
