Many are familiar with the anecdote about how a first grader, discovering on the morning of September 2 the fact that he needs to go to school again, was very surprised. He was told that “on the first of September you will go to school,” but no one warned that this venture would drag on for 10 years …

This is an anecdote, but in life the situation usually develops more dramatically, causing a lot of worries for both the child and adults. The reluctance to learn, or lack of school motivation, which teachers and parents so often talk about, can have completely different reasons.

And the whirlwind begins: “I don’t want to go to school,” “I’m lazy,” “my head hurts.” Then the head / stomach / leg really starts to hurt. Then, as a rule, psychosomatics is connected, and it becomes clear to everyone around that it is necessary to deal with the reasons - why the child does not want to go to school. Why do not detailed and colorful stories help that “you have to want to go to school”, that “you have to study, otherwise you will become a janitor”?

The "laziness" that children so often refer to can also hide many other factors. This may be an insufficient level of development of cognitive processes, peculiarities of the emotional sphere, lack of development of school motivation, stress and even the complexity of interpersonal relationships.

Let's consider the most common reasons:

Cognitive abilities. It is really difficult for a child to learn, and therefore he has a completely understandable unwillingness to do what is incomprehensible and difficult. Insufficient level of development of cognitive abilities. Or, what is said - the child "does not pull the school curriculum." The beginning of schooling makes great demands on the level of development of attention, memory, thinking. It is also important to be able to work according to instructions. We often encounter a situation when, at the general level of the age norm, certain moments "sink". Either there are difficulties with concentration of attention, difficulties with the perception of information "by ear", or with spatial thinking. As a result, the child does not cope with this or that school subject. In a situation where the general level of development does not correspond to the age norm, then, as a rule, it is recommended to change the educational route. How to determine? Pass professional psychological diagnostics and draw up a plan for further work: to develop what "sinks".

Personal characteristics. It would be wrong to reduce all school difficulties solely to an insufficient level of development of cognitive processes. Personality also often makes it difficult for a child to learn. The most common situation: parents complain that the child “knows everything, but cannot answer”. School anxiety often prevents children from expressing themselves, to demonstrate everything that they are capable of. As a result: "he taught, but he cannot tell." He comes out to the board, his legs give way, his heart pounds, his voice trembles, it is clear that there is no time for correct answers. Before control or other important work, the situation is aggravated. What to do? To correct anxiety, the easiest option is to contact a child psychologist. It should be noted that anxiety also has different forms and causes, which we will definitely talk about in one of the following articles.

Difficulties in adaptation and difficulties in relationships. If a child is not comfortable in the classroom / at school, it is clear that he does not want to go there. Adaptation to school, a new team can last up to six months and be accompanied by mood swings, emotional outbursts, conflicts. Then, as a rule, the situation is normalized. If this does not happen, and the child still does not want to go to school, then it is advisable to consult a psychologist. It would not be correct to reduce all problems to adaptation. Unfortunately, there are often situations when a child is not comfortable in a team, when it is difficult for him to find friends or when he is offended by other guys. He cannot say directly what worries him, and this tension manifests itself as an unwillingness to learn. What to do? To begin with, talk to your child confidentially about how he feels at school. And also try to assess his mood at school by indirect signs (whether he communicates with other children, whether he talks about school himself, what his mood is before and after school).

Stressful situation. A reluctance to learn can be a reaction to a stressful situation a child is going through. This may be due to family situations: conflicts in the family, the experience of a parental divorce, the appearance of a youngest child in the family. Stress can be triggered by certain events: moving, losing a loved one, quarrels with a friend. What to do? It makes sense to figure out what worries the child, help him get through this situation (independently or with the help of a psychologist), and then solve school problems.

We have briefly discussed the reasons that can lead to the fact that the child does not want to learn. Now it has probably become clearer why “morality and preaching”, the belt and the confiscation of gadgets do not help (and even if hiding the cord from the computer will not solve the problem). Because this will not make an anxious child calmer, it will not become easier for a timid child to communicate, and for an inattentive child, it will be easier to listen to the teacher for the whole lesson. The most important thing, if you are faced with a stable reluctance of the child to learn, is not to start the situation in the hope that one fine morning the child will happily run to school, but to lend a helping hand.
