Many have heard of such a phenomenon as emotional burnout - a state of exhaustion, when the performed activity ceases to bring pleasure, cynicism, detachment appear, and even mental abilities deteriorate. Various diseases, when the body can no longer cope with accumulated stress, and addictions can also be extreme manifestations of burnout.

Why does burnout occur?

  • Emotional stress;
  • Lack of remuneration (material and psychological) for work;
  • Monotonous work;
  • Too busy schedule;
  • Lack of support and care about your condition.

How does burnout manifest itself?

Cynicism and detachment - communication and activity no longer bring pleasure, and the outlook on the development of one's career and life becomes sharply pessimistic. There is a desire to ignore others and their work responsibilities.

Exhaustion is a chronic feeling of fatigue, lack of energy and strength. As a result, the person becomes irritable and forgetful. Trying to get enough sleep and rest does not bring relief. Physically exhaustion manifests itself in insomnia, lack of appetite, heart problems, and frequent colds.

Apathy is a lack of desire to desire something to change a situation. The tension in the activity reaches the limit, but productivity still decreases.

Who is affected by burnout?

  • Representatives of professions who work with people (doctors, teachers, psychologists, priests);
  • People who bear great responsibility in their work (managers, rescue workers, pilots, air traffic controllers);
  • Professionals facing high emotional stress (police officers, rescue workers, social workers).

My list does not cover all possible professions, because anyone can face burnout. It can also occur in situations not related to professional activities - for example, parental burnout, volunteer burnout, etc. An important criterion is the imbalance between what I receive and what I give.

How to deal with burnout?

Prevention is the easiest way. First of all, taking care of yourself (about your health and body, nutrition, sleep, massage, sports), organizing work and rest, respecting the boundaries between work and personal life (which includes, for example, not answering work calls after 8 pm), regular vacation, during which you do not think about work or do it. Having time for yourself and activities that fill you with resources reduces the likelihood of burnout.

If you notice manifestations of burnout in yourself, you need to take a break from the activities that caused the burnout, pay attention to your health, and fill yourself with resources as much as necessary. In some cases, it is necessary to change the field of activity altogether - temporarily or permanently.

To avoid devastating consequences, you can seek help from a specialist. Body-oriented psychotherapy and bio-suggestive relaxation can help you cope with the effects of burnout and find new resources.

Recognizing that my resource is not endless and understanding that you need to take care of yourself first in order to be able to help others are key to preventing and treating burnout. Anyone can be affected, and it is important to give yourself permission to take care of yourself.
