Psychologist & Psychotherapist & Psychiatrist
It seems to me that many have at least once thought about who a psychologist is and why he is needed at all. I often heard: “What, is there really a difference between a psychologist, a psychotherapist and a psychiatrist?” And similar questions. In principle, this is a normal question for a person who is not in the subject, but I think that it is still worthwhile to clarify a little
So, what is the difference between a psychologist, psychotherapist and psychiatrist
Let's start with a psychologist. A psychologist is a person who has received a psychological education at a university with a degree in Psychology. There is a medical, general, social, educational psychologist, and so on. Usually psychologists live in universities and schools. They can also be found in such professions / areas as: recruiting (selection / adaptation / training of personnel), coach (trainings), social work, marketing. People in this profession cannot engage in therapy, since they do not have additional education (specialization), but they can advise (superficially)
The next in line is the psychotherapist. The biggest misconception is that a psychotherapist must have a medical education. Honey. education is not required. But it takes a lot of time to become a psychotherapist. In addition to the university, a person undergoes one (or more) specialization, which is aimed at a deeper study of life processes, psycho-emotional state, methods of a specific direction. The main directions are gestalt therapy, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), psychoanalysis, psychodrama, body-oriented psychotherapy, etc. In fact, this is not the entire list. Also, a mandatory aspect of training is attending personal psychotherapy. Different psychotherapeutic associations set different norms (At least 50 hours). The psychotherapist helps to solve deep-seated requests, childhood traumas, help find ways to solve the problem, as well as work with phobias, fears, depression, etc. The psychotherapist provides support and stability, a person in therapy has the opportunity to meet and get to know himself again
The final chord will be a psychiatrist. This is a specialist with a university degree in psychiatry, a field of medicine that studies mental disorders. A person who works as a psychiatrist can prescribe medication. If a person does not remember who he is, does not understand where he is, what time of year and what time it is now - this is a psychiatrist. This person works exclusively with mental illness (psychoses) and severe psycho-emotional disorders. The most common: schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder, clinical depression, alcohol and drug addiction, bipolar disorder, hallucinations, etc. Unfortunately, most psychoses are genetic and cannot be cured
