The life of a modern person is reduced to constant decision-making, and all decisions are interconnected and have a huge impact on the thoughts and behavior of other people.

It is impossible not to notice the speed at which the modern world is changing: various technologies are developing, trends are changing, new professions are emerging, new demands of society are emerging, changes are taking place at all levels.

Each person strives to achieve their goals. Sometimes it happens that other people's goals may conflict with yours. And every choice made in a good way should take into account the possibility of various conflicts and ways to resolve them. This is where strategic thinking is needed. The ability to think strategically is a personal characteristic, it also determines the degree of maturity of a person.

There have always been and will be people who have time to react, foresee such changes, and those who just go with the flow. And one of the key differences that distinguishes the first from the second people is that some have developed strategic thinking, while others do not.

What is strategic thinking?

A person perceives and processes information from the world around him, thoughts are formed in him, ideas are born, which helps to live in this world, it helps to cope with emerging difficulties, achieve desired goals, and solve emerging problems. It helps to do it better, faster, better with less resources, such as (effort, time, money).

Strategic thinking helps to optimize the use of various resources. It helps, it will never replace real actions, it will only tell you which of the actions will be the best in this case, at a given moment in time. And this is its main difference from ordinary or short-term thinking.

Ordinary thinking is quite enough for routine actions, it is enough to calmly float with the flow of life. But if you swim against the current or through it, you want to achieve something, then you need strategic thinking. And the better you have it, the more chances you have for success.

Strategic thinking orders and organizes life. It can be likened to binoculars. How much can be seen for a couple of kilometers with the naked eye? And with good optics? Likewise, with strategic thinking, mastering it, you will see what you could not see before, new horizons will open up for you. You will be able to look into the future and form your own, what you want. And this is not a metaphor, the strategy really works with the future, it shapes it.

Components of strategic thinking:

Before we analyze the elements of strategic thinking, for a start it is very important that a person understands what he really wants and what values he has. Otherwise, a request to one's own brain will look as vague as: "Go there, I don't know where, bring that, I don't know what."

The strategy can be studied by its constituent elements, which can be identified, evaluated, taken into account in their calculations. The elements of the strategy in different cases may have different weight or influence, but they will certainly be:

The ability to foresee how events will develop (cause-and-effect relationships), to what result certain actions will lead.

Choice is the beginning of strategic thinking. This is another of the axioms of strategy. If there is no choice or we do not see it, then there is no room for strategic maneuver. Lack of choice is movement along the previously selected track. We can only change track at the fork in the road.

Awareness of their own values and principles, on the basis of which decisions will be made. Courage and desire to defend their priorities, to follow them.

Principles. This is the next item. In order not to come up with solutions to all new emerging problems every time, do not suffer from the choice of what to do for this, you can formulate the principles of strategic thinking. Of course, it is not worth bringing the principles to the point of absurdity, here you need to use common sense.

Search for opportunities in any, even the most negative situation. How can she help to achieve the goal?

Common sense is the foundation on which any strategic building should be based. The principles mentioned above can be a support for thinking, but not thinking itself. You still have to think for yourself.

How do you develop strategic thinking?

To begin with, it is important to understand what is necessary, what would be present in the personality of a person who wants to develop strategic thinking in himself, what key features he should have, which distinguish strategists from other people, so let's go:

Ability to see the situation outside the box (more extensively), understand it and build your move in a direction atypical for most people; simultaneously analyze, synthesize and generalize the information received, creatively, versatile approach to solving the problem that has arisen (including flexibly reacting to new changed conditions); deliberately allocate available resources and find options for finding missing information; think in accordance with the future, effectively applying past experience, correlating your current actions with the obtained or possible result, the ability to project in your mind several options for solving a problem is also important.

Successful people are characterized by a desire for personal growth, for constant movement forward, for meaningful results, for action and choice, for self-esteem, for ease, the ability to think quickly is also extremely important; ability to show initiative and curiosity; establish new relationships; make intuitive decisions; think big but not in isolation from reality (but take into account the gap between theory and practice. Strategy should always be in contact with practice. Breaking away from real life, all strategic reflections lose value. Therefore, thinking includes not only the ability to holistically see the situation, outline goals, but and the ability to choose the right course of action).

Thus, based on the characteristics described above, the following strategic decision-making scheme can be derived:

  • the emergence, problems, goals or objectives (what to do?), in other words, is the awareness of a problem situation or a non-standard vision of an existing situation that requires a solution or improvement,
  • consideration of options for solving the situation that has arisen (how to do this?),
  • assessment of opportunities or search and activation of internal (personal) and external resources to solve or improve the situation being worked out (what resources?),
  • forecasting results, analyzing risks and a detailed analysis of options for solving the problem (what are the risks?), this element may have several lines of development, depending on how many solutions were identified in the second element;
  • choosing the most appropriate option and writing a step-by-step action plan (what are the steps?), which includes prioritizing within the situation being worked out, calculating risk events based on the selected option, before allocating resources
  • implementation of the plan, together with the use of background analysis of the situation, in order to timely respond to environmental changes and reduce the influence of adverse factors or use them for their own purposes within the framework of the strategy being developed.

This scheme allows you to track the results of your activities in each element of the strategy implementation.

The relationship between personality and strategy:

This is one of the key axioms of the strategy. This is the foundation of any strategic building. What are the abilities of a strategist, such is the result. What abilities are we talking about? This is intelligence, attentiveness, patience, accuracy, discipline, dedication, curiosity, flexibility of thinking and at the same time focus on the task. In the absence of these qualities, the effectiveness of strategic thinking will be questionable.

A weak personality is a weak strategy. If a person is in despondency, in weakness or lack of will, then there will be no sense from any cunning plans. If the strategist is incapacitated or weakened, then there is no main thing - will, energy - the driving force that implements these plans. If all this is not there, then it will be extremely difficult for a person to implement his strategic plans with due effort to achieve success, and this is where the most important secret lies.

That's all. Until next time. Sincerely Dmitry Poteev.
