Draw your symptom

Very often we do not pay attention to bodily sensations. We are simply not instilled from childhood such a habit - to be sensitive to ourselves and our body. But this is so important, because our body can “tell” us about something very important. Of course, now the rhythm of life is very accelerated and it is not always possible to stop and listen to you. And pharmaceutical companies are doing everything to make our existence easier. Does relief really come? You take a pill, for example, for a headache, and it helps, for a while. But the headache comes back again and again. Sound familiar? Then let's figure it out

A symptom is viewed in psychotherapy as a stopped, unmanifest emotion that becomes destructive at the bodily level. It is energy that is directed inward. That is, when there is no way out for feelings, they turn into physical and often chronic discomfort or illness

I would also like to add that working with a psychosomatic symptom still comes down to working with the whole personality

How do you find and understand your symptom? Today I offer you an interesting exercise that will help you, at least, explore your bodily sensations

This exercise will help you better understand yourself and how you feel in your body. It is also aimed at the study and study of emotions and feelings

You will need paper, paints (ideally) or crayons, if paints you can draw with your fingers

Close your eyes and try to visualize your symptom, it can be any sensation in your body that makes you uncomfortable. It will be more effective if there is discomfort during the exercise itself. For example: headache, runny nose, sore throat, chronic illness, back pain, etc. Try to draw this symptom on paper. You can paint however you like. It can be either an abstraction or something more specific (for example, some kind of object or living being). In the process of drawing, imagine your illness, as it were, visualize it. When finished, look at your drawing. How does it make you feel? Try to concentrate more on these sensations

The following questions may help you:

  1. What happened to you when you were painting?

  2. How do you feel about your symptom?

  3. What is the emotion / feeling behind your symptom?

  4. Perhaps in everyday life you forbid yourself to express this or that emotion?

  5. What does your discomfort do to you?

  6. How does it affect you?

  7. What function does it perform in your life, what is it for?

  8. When did the symptom appear in your life and in connection with what events?

  9. To whom is your energy really directed?

Direct these questions more to the inner feelings

Don't rush yourself. Take as long as you need to do this exercise. And remember, the body is the mirror of experience
