I often hear this question from moms. You involuntarily get scared when your baby, looking so happy, begins to paint in black and brown, ignoring such beautiful bright colors, for example, such as yellow. After all, black is an alarming sign…. This is the color of fear, despondency, death. This is all negative-negative.

But in this situation, we need to understand one thing. Color is just color. He's neither good nor bad. We ourselves endow colors with meaning, emotional coloring. It is important to take a closer look at what the child is drawing (hedgehogs / wolves / bears / seals can quite rightly be depicted as black) and under what conditions the drawing was made. Drawing together, your active interest in drawing will help clarify what exactly the child is investing in his work.

Of course, there are culturally defined meanings of color. For example, in Slavic traditions, black is a historically mourning color, and white is the color of purity, the color of the bride's wedding dress. But in China, India, Japan, the mourning color is traditionally white. And in some African countries it is red.

Children, especially small ones, have not yet mastered the general cultural meanings of colors. Therefore, they just paint with the colors they like. From my practice of working with children, I can say that children under 3-4 years old can paint a lot with black or brown just because it is the most "productive". For example, you need to dip a brush in black paint much less often, he writes longer. Yellow, on the contrary, must be constantly added to the brush. A purely practical moment. Also, dark lines look sharper, more contrasting, they seem to be more real. The process is very important for children, they try different colors, showing themselves. For them, this property of flowers is a big discovery. Do not stop them in these discoveries, help to appropriate the experience of knowing the world in its diversity.

It can also be a sign of a protest crisis for 3 years. When a child experiences separation and the “I-myself” situation, opposing himself to others. “I’ll draw with a color that my mother doesn’t like” (if my mother previously forbade painting with black) or “I’ll draw it as I want, and not as it really is”.

A child's favorite color can change with age. Over time, each color is filled with individual emotional meaning from personal life experience. For example, a child may suddenly fall in love with green because that color is his favorite cartoon character or stuffed animal.

A girl may gradually begin to love pink and crimson shades, simply because a lot of toys "for girls" are made in this range. The active "pink-crimson" period in girls is observed from about 3 to 6 years old, they seem to confirm by this their belonging to the same sex. And avoid black colors, for example in clothes. After all, all negative characters in cartoons are usually in black clothes. This is due to social stereotypes that they learn through objects, fairy tales, cartoons.

At the age of 6-8, they can choose colors more freely, which is very interesting to watch. When a child gains enough personal resources to experiment with colors and try on different roles, this is an indicator of positive dynamics of personality development. Girls can play a witch, boys can play a villain, a criminal. This is a very important step. The child learns to be different, tries negative roles, accepting with this experience his "shadow" qualities.

When to worry?

It is important to be close to the child, supporting him in discoveries and knowledge. Explore together new meanings and properties of colors, new ways of drawing and techniques in creativity. For example, there are art trends such as graphics and calligraphy. Sometimes children (like adults) can paint with dark, "dirty" colors in case of bad mood, cloudy weather, physical weakness. But these states are temporary, not systemic. But there are times when black drawings are really an alarming sign.

It is worth contacting a specialist if, in addition to drawing pictures in black, your child:

  • depressed
  • closed
  • often has negative emotions
  • sluggish physically
  • not active
  • sluggish or unresponsive to favorite activities or goodies
  • lost appetite
  • has sleep disturbances, nightmares
  • overreacts emotionally to familiar events
  • teenage years

If you have noticed several points from this list in the behavior of your child, it is possible that he is experiencing difficulties that it is difficult for him to cope with on his own. This is a reason to take a closer look at the child, give him more support and attention, and, if necessary, seek help from a psychologist.
