Any document that you prepare while looking for a job is a phrase in a dialogue. Something that helps build a relationship with a future employer. And each document has its own mission. A cover letter serves as a kind of "clothing" for a resume. Its functions: to focus the employer on your coincidences with him and to work with objections.

Of course, you don't always need a cover letter. As a career counselor who has watched recruiters' lives up close, I always advise: don't ask for a cover letter, don't write. It will be enough ordinary correspondence, the principles of which I talk about in the video on my YouTube channel

When is the letter asked?

May be asked when responding to work sites or LinkedIn. The system displays a window where you need to write something. And it's better to prepare in advance.

Be sure to ask for a letter if organizations do not hire a resume. For example, non-profit or public organizations, state-owned enterprises can simply give you a table in which you will write down the start and end dates of some work, the main functions and the names of managers, who you need to call to ask for recommendations from your work book.

Many job seekers take the requirement for a cover letter as an insult: “I wrote everything on my resume! What more do you want from me ?!”

In no case do employers want to humiliate the applicant. They want to see the main thing right away. Find common meanings for you and for them.

In your cover letter, try to answer the questions:

  1. Why do I think I can do this job?
  2. What barriers to cooperation can you as an employer find, and why won't they prevent me from doing this job?
  3. Why am I interested in an organization (vacancy)?
  4. What am I as a professional and a person?

And on all this you need to spend no more than 500 words. Better - keep within 300.

The more information you have collected about the company and the vacancy, the better you grasp what is most important in this vacancy, the more chances that the letter will lead to a result.

Examples of cover letters, I am ready to share with everyone who writes and asks about it. And if you want to prepare for your job search with my help, then on Udemy I conduct online training.
