Why is non-judgmental perception so good and why people are still in no hurry to give up evaluations (and evaluative perception)?

What is non-judgmental perception in general?

This is a rejection of evaluations and comparisons of what a person sees in the world around him. In ordinary life, a person quickly translates all the objects he sees into the categories "good" / "bad" / "foo be so" / "oh, how lovely" / "Stalin is not on you" - and so on.

Everything you see is instantly "laid out in boxes." And in each "box of perception" there is an imperceptible assessment. And she instantly sticks to any object she sees, and begins to influence the interaction with him. This is the usual evaluative perception.

And how does it work?

Here is a girl walking down the street, she is beautiful, and this is "good". And here comes another girl, she weighs 15 kg more than the first one - bliiin, fat, phew such a be, how not ashamed to go out into the street with such bodies, and even in leggings?

(Although, it would seem, what do you care about a stranger unfamiliar girl, her kilograms and her leggings? But a person can purse his lips, clatter his tongue, and loudly express his Very Valuable Opinion about tasteless leggings and fats dressed in them. issue).

And even that would be okay. Well, someone says nasty things to strangers, which means that he is an unpleasant person and many will not communicate with him.

The worst thing: by giving up non-judgmental perception and attaching instant evaluations to everything, a person at once loses the opportunity to see a bunch of characteristics and opportunities in the world around him.

Here you despise a fat woman, and she, by the way, is a charming person, an excellent friend, a professional and a wonderful mistress. Well, for example.

And why are people in no hurry to give up evaluative perception? If it distorts everything like that.

The fact is that evaluative perception allows you to quickly assess the encountered object and put a label on it: useful (pleasant, happy, brings positive emotions) or useless (unpleasant, dangerous, painful, etc.). And this, firstly (and most importantly), greatly simplifies the way of interacting with the world. A lot of effort and energy is saved that a person could spend on distinguishing the properties of objects and examining their nuances. But life is already a very difficult thing, hundreds of decisions have to be made a day:

  • buy sour cream 20% fat or 25%
  • wear blue wedges or crimson buckles
  • go to the gym or him, too tired today
  • read a book or watch a TV series (or stick on YouTube)
  • go drinking with friends or still keep the promise made to yourself and maintain a healthy lifestyle
  • take a loaf of fresh bread or eat yesterday's bread, we will manage
  • buy a new skirt or pay for the internet

etc.

Don't underestimate the impact of decisions on our brains. Organizational psychologists even have the term decision fatigue, literally "decision fatigue." This is an occupational disease of managers who only do what they accept, make, make decisions about their work. Each decision must be weighed, the prospects must be calculated, the consequences must be calculated, and the responsibility must be taken upon oneself - and not just poke a finger: "so be it." And at some point, the body is depleted and the manager gets very tired from the overabundance of decisions.

Therefore, evaluative perception is very often not so much evil as good. He saves a lot of energy, just a lot.

However, it also has a downside: you cannot get new prospects with the usual methods of assessing. When a person puts a label from the familiar spectrum on every object he encounters, he can function perfectly within the usual framework, that is, very quickly run along the beaten track. But he will not get new experience, new sensations in life.

A quick assessment is like "empty calories": it satiates quickly, but it does little to the body. Evaluative perception is generally hierarchical: with the help of evaluation, a person quickly gets an idea of where he is now in relation to the objects of the surrounding world and people. And he makes an express assessment: I am higher or lower than them (those whom I assess). And, accordingly, I am OK or not OK. And if everything is normal with me, the person understands, then he quickly calms down (and if not very normal, then a salutary depreciation can come to the rescue).

For example: here is Vasya - he is cool, he is a top manager (I want to be like Vasya, I imitate him). Or here Lena - she is a beauty and the daughter of rich parents (I envy Lena and despise a little: if I had the same dad, I would also cut it in an expensive wheelbarrow!). Or here is Petya - he is a hippie, a non-possessor, torn jeans, unwashed shoes, a guitar and a box of grass in my pocket (I stay away from Petya, I'm afraid of him, but I'm also terribly curious: what kind of animal is that?). In general, you can stick a whole bunch of labels on any person, however, they will be slightly different for different people and social groups: someone respects hippies, and someone hates capitalists and their children, so the assessments from different people will differ somewhat …

But the fact remains: the label simplifies perception, it cuts off a whole spectrum of "unnecessary" properties of a person or object, makes it look like a black-and-white light. Sometimes it is more important to simplify, because it is difficult and energy consuming to look at an object in its entirety.

And sometimes it is important to see in the familiar something new, fresh, something that will help change your life. Get yourself out of your usual rut. Try something new.

And for this, such a tool as non-judgmental perception is used.

As you know, a lot of energy is spent on non-judgmental perception. In order to tune in to non-judgmental perception, special practices are needed.

(For example, Gestalt therapists are specially taught this for a long time. So that, seeing a person, they would react not “she came in a fashionable beautiful blue jacket”, but “on the client's blue jacket with four shiny buttons.” Or not “he began to go bald early”, and “on the client's head there are large bald patches on the forehead and on the sides.” Yes, non-judgmental perception sometimes looks like a police protocol).

Meditation also helps to tune in to non-judgmental perception, or simply a state when a person is in a resource, vigorous, fresh and full of strength. And certainly emotional stability and harmony of the inner state in that help.

What are the weaknesses of non-judgmental perception, it is clear: this is a very energy-consuming state, for its practice you need a special skill (quite mastered, but not right off the bat). That is, it’s difficult and exhausting.

What are the strengths of non-judgmental perception?

Non-judgmental perception allows you to jump out of the well-worn rut of habits. The trained skill of non-judgmental perception helps not to depend on external assessment and not to hang your own assessments on people and objects. Sometimes I manage to form my own feeling (that is, not an automatic reaction "this is a Tajik, I hate Tajiks" - but, trying to understand my feelings from a person who stands in front of me, you may be surprised to realize that he is frightening. Or surprises. Or unconsciously like - although always, it would seem, such people were unpleasant to me; but this one - I like it!). And build a relationship with a person on this basis of live, direct perception.

Non-judgmental perception makes it possible to build conscious, lively, direct relationships with the world and those people with whom you have to interact.

Non-judgmental perception allows you to see the world in its entirety, to understand how beautiful, rich and rich it is. It is this non-judgmental perception that allows change to happen.

It is precisely the reliance on non-judgmental perception that allows one to make a real, deep choice, and not rely on the usual, proven, but emasculated decisions (as in the case of evaluative perception).

Choice is powerful. And sometimes you have to pay dearly for it.
