You can't look at the enemy with disgust

- what if you need to eat it?

Stanislav Jerzy Lec

Do you know why animals don't have feelings of disgust? Because no animal will eat what it doesn't like. Only man does this. He pulls into his mouth and swallows any muck. And that, from which disgusting, is an illegal inside us. This applies to food both physical and spiritual. It doesn't matter if you swallowed a rotten egg, a greasy joke addressed to yourself, or just imagined that it was inside you. Vomiting will be in all cases

It is precisely in order to regulate the use of all unnecessary trash inside that there is disgust. This is a basic, only human, elementary emotion. It is designed to signal to the body that there is already a lot of something in it. That it's time to stop and stop swallowing. It is necessary to get rid of the excess and inedible that is already inside. Otherwise, there is a risk of poisoning.

Disgust can be divided into biological and social … With biological it is simple - it is disgust polished by evolution. It helps a person to survive, protects from contact with infection. Natural disgust does not allow people to use the products of their own and other people's vital activity, everything that has left the body or has deteriorated. Unlike animals. I remember how my cocker spaniel licked freshly vomited food from the carpet with appetite. Brr! One memory is disgusting. It's different with people.

How do you feel about yourself? Let's say it is loyal. And with various functions, you are doing well, the stomach is working, the intestines are contracting, the heart is beating, the blood is moving through the veins. This is all yours - this is you. Try spitting in a cup of water. Want to drink it? Hardly. A second ago, this saliva was you, but drinking water, where it now floats, is disgusting. Proven experimentally.

Social disgust is more complicated. Because there are other people involved. This includes the ability of a person to avoid situations that are considered disgusting. In my life, these are places of mass gathering of people: train stations, markets, public transport at rush hour and morgues. I think you have it differently.

In society, disgust often breeds prejudice.

The sight of human deformity, inferiority, leaking blood, open wounds, limits people in their potential to help. Not indifference to someone else's misfortune, but disgust can turn people away from each other. The emotion of disgust increases the distance between people. The stronger and longer the experience, the faster the forgetting of the disgusting object occurs. Contact breaks down.

How to understand that you are experiencing exactly disgust, and not fear or sadness

Suffice it to recall how they describe it: a lump in the throat, fed up, no longer climbs, it is sickening to look, disgusting inside, will roll up to the throat. The main focus of attention is the throat. Because we can let them in or hold back inside, the disgust striving outward.

But we do not begin to regulate this process right away.

Once, I found my one-year-old daughter eating my own poop. When she ran her hand into the warm substance, there was a lot of curiosity on her face, and not a drop of disgust. And the middle daughter, up to four years old, ate boogers from her nose with interest. Disgusting? Not for small children. Disgust takes root in a person at the age of five to eight years. Until that time, children may be spitting unpalatable food. Tasty, tasteless, I don't want to - their criterion. Something may not be easy on children, but not disgusting. But disgust plays an important role in parenting.

Therefore, it is important for adults to be attentive to him. If a child is regularly punished for spitting out food, forcing her to eat up forcibly, he may eventually become insensitive to disgust. In the future, the child will not be able to resist abuse because he will not feel excessive pressure or threatening contact. The limits of sensitivity will be blurred.

Perhaps I will surprise someone, but not only he can turn away obviously unpleasant and not useful things. Disgusting is love, tenderness, intimacy and even the presence of a mother nearby. Simply because rotation occurs when there is too much of something. It doesn't matter what. This is good. Toxic love exists and is healthy when the distance adjuster - disgust works.

Bad when disgust does not appear at all. Like those children, fed to the point of loss of sensitivity. Then we will swallow everything that is offered to us without caesura. The body and psyche will be poisoned.

How to avoid poisoning? Taste everything. Absorb food and information slowly, chew well. Sniff at everything that strives in your direction. Mentally put in yourself. This is also called listening to yourself. The body will tell you whether it is edible or inedible.

It's like with Fritz Perls' cow: “A piece of meat lying in a meadow does not exist for a cow. He never becomes a "figure", is not eaten and therefore cannot cause disgust."
