Quite often, during therapy sessions, one can hear from a client “You know, I sometimes have the feeling that different parts of me live inside me, different subpersonalities responsible for different actions”. At the same time, a person is healthy and does not suffer from psychosis, he simply notices that there are some multidirectional parts in the psyche. Such "splitting" is typical for every healthy person.
Parts of the psyche are in constant conflict, often a person does not really like them in himself and rejects them, does not want to recognize them. In other words, this is what we want to hide from ourselves. In Jungian psychotherapy this is called a shadow, and there is also anima and animus.
In psychoanalysis, the conflicting parts are called unconscious. The essence of subpersonalities lies in the fact that a person is constantly fighting with them, trying to deny their existence, trying not to notice and reject. The essence of a more or less healthy psyche is that all of its shortcomings, advantages and
the resource parts, including the failed ones, are known and recognized by the person. In addition, the conflicting parts of the psyche at some point can "agree" - first one wins, then the other part.
Subpersonality is perceived by consciousness as something separate from itself, as well as an internal image attached to these elements. Subpersonalities arise at different stages of a person's development and provide protection and realization of his needs, allowing him to live the way he lives.
An exercise
To complete the exercise, you need to take a sheet of paper, a pen and write absolutely all parts of your psyche that can come to mind. For example, the part responsible for safety, entertainment, innovation, behavior (keeping oneself in line), condemnation, praise, and so on. There must be at least 10 points, the optimal number is 30. To some extent they may be similar, however, the more you write about yourself, the more useful this topic will be and you can get to know yourself better.
