Obsessive-compulsive patterns of behavior must be distinguished from the obsessive-compulsive personality structure and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

People raised in an unpredictable or family environment that was characterized by confusion and confusion, were able to withstand, due to identification with other patterns of behavior or worldview, may demonstrate an approaching obsession with values or feel a compulsive need for law and order.

Elena's neighbor, whose parents suffered from alcoholism during one drunken scandal of her parents, took the crying girl to her home for several hours. While staying with a neighbor, a little girl heard a woman giving detailed instructions to her daughter in cooking borscht over the phone. The detail of the instructions impressed the girl so much that she began to cook all the dishes according to the cookbook, which she took from the regional library. Since then, the thoroughness of following the recipe has become constant for Elena, like some other behavioral acts.

Such a pattern of behavior often appears in adult children, whose parents suffered from alcoholism or drug addiction. Their absolute obedience to any value system or to the laws of order and self-discipline gave them the opportunity to avoid the confusion that was in their family and ensured the creation of a structure that they would henceforth abide by.

Such people do not exhibit other traits that would make it possible to classify them as obsessive-compulsive personalities. So, they are not so devoid of contact with their feelings and have more contact with themselves. They need to use values and order to maintain and maintain a sense of consistency.

Another group of people who can give the impression of being obsessive and / or compulsive are people who, through such behavior, compensate for a hidden lack of personality structure. In order to maintain a fragile sense of self, they need an anchoring point. The need to compensate for their personal experiences that would otherwise be confusing, they are similar to the previous group.

The inviolability of their credo and conservatism in their actions makes it possible to gain a stronger, lasting sense of self and security. Another similarity to the group described above is that these individuals will not necessarily exhibit other obsessive-compulsive personality traits. And although they may exhibit a lack of expression, they do not exhibit the same tendency towards compulsive self-control that is characteristic of the compulsive-compulsive personality. Not being well-formed personalities, they are not able to skillfully manage themselves, and clinging to a certain structure of values allows them to at least superficially strengthen their self.
