Art therapy sessions - they are so spontaneous, unpredictable, you never know how the energy will end and where it will unfold. Some people are afraid of art therapy, because a person, unwittingly, can say much more in a drawing than he can say in words. And if words are controllable, then drawing is a spontaneous process, and it can unfold strong powerful feelings that a person did not plan to come into contact with at all. But it is precisely this removal of some control that makes art therapy so effective and allows us to touch not only what we know and understand about ourselves, but also our unconscious, which conceals many secrets, mysteries and unresolved internal conflicts.

Art therapy (or art therapy) - this term was first introduced in 1938 by the English artist Adrian Hill, who worked with patients with tuberculosis. He noticed that being creative distracts people from suffering and helps to cope with illness. A person is able to switch and the energy of creativity uses such resources of the body that we ourselves do not even suspect. No wonder art therapy has found its application as an important auxiliary tool in the treatment of both mental and somatic diseases.

What is the remarkable feature and, dare I say, the uniqueness of art therapy? And the fact that this method is both diagnostic and therapeutic (therapeutic).

Where is art therapy applied? The range of application is very wide and the method has long gone beyond the scope of medical institutions. If we talk about medicine, then, of course, these are psychiatric clinics, departments of neuroses and departments for the treatment of many somatic diseases (both children and adults, including up to the most severe ones - oncological). Art therapy, as I already wrote, is a wonderful way of switching (it can even relieve pain), psychological relief, and positive creative energy.

The use of art therapy outside of medicine, I think, has found no less, and maybe even wider application. The art therapy method is in the arsenal of many specialists - psychologists. He works both individually and in groups. It is indispensable for people who want to explore their inner world, unleash their creative potential, choose a type of activity, understand why there are difficulties in communicating with other people, and also just helps those people who are not verbose and not always able to express their emotions with words, but from this their inner world does not cease to be rich and saturated. A separate and large niche is occupied by art therapy with pregnant women. It is very effective in this area. The art method also plays a huge role in child and family therapy.

The arsenal of art therapy includes not only paints and paper, but also plasticine, clay, toys, singing, dancing, music and everything that helps to express oneself spontaneously and creatively. The art method is perfect for diagnostics, as the so-called. “Projective techniques”, when a person, for example, is asked to draw or choose his own image from the offered figures, how he imagines himself, what he would like to be, what are his ideas about other people, etc.

As you can see, a large and effective psychological work can be done with the help of art therapy non-verbally, i.e. without words. Speech does not always help to express the full range of emotions that are currently present in a person.

The interpretation of the drawing is of great importance. The drawing can be interpreted by both a specialist and the client himself. Better to leave the interpretation to the client himself. After all, he himself knows what exactly a given image or a certain color means for him, he himself determines the plot of the drawing, he himself knows what feelings he had during his work. It is very often possible to observe how the emotional background of a person changes during a session. For example, by the saturation of colors, one can observe that at the beginning of the work there were strong emotions (anger, fear, guilt), and at the end the tension goes away, the tones become pastel, the strokes are less intense, etc. The art therapist pays attention to all these things and notes or asks the client questions about how his state changes during the session.

A big misconception of many clients: “I don’t want to draw because I don’t know how.” A person is afraid of his imperfection and here the task of a specialist is to explain that the art method is not painting. No special training is required here. On the contrary, it is precisely in the “inability”, in the “non-mastery” of the correct technique that is the main highlight. Perfection of lines is not required here, everything is possible here, here it is free, easy and healthy. Actually, what we strive for in life. Do not be afraid of your imperfection!
