Existentialists identify four givens of existence, four inevitability, four sources of anxiety: death, freedom, loneliness and meaninglessness.
With death, everything is more or less clear: we will all die and this cannot but worry us.
With meaninglessness too: we do not know if there is a meaning in our life? And perhaps it does not exist at all … And the realization of this, of course, is also difficult to bear.
It's harder with loneliness. You might think: “Well, how am I lonely? Here I have friends, parents, family, employees …”But no, we can never truly become one with someone! We are still separate. The people we meet are only our temporary companions. We came to this world alone and we will leave it alone.
What about freedom? Freedom is good! Freedom is when you do not depend on anyone, and you can do whatever you want. Is not it so? Yes! But freedom also means that nothing is predetermined! There is no predetermined plan, nothing to rely on. Where you turn - it will be! Freedom means that a person is responsible for his decisions, actions, for his life situation, and there is no one to charge this responsibility. We are doomed to freedom! And freedom is a responsibility.
The next question that arises is: how to live with all this now? And everyone solves it in their own way. Religion promises eternal life, various teachings explain the meaning of life. They often try to cope with loneliness by entering into a merger with another person, replacing I with WE. They struggle with freedom by trying to shift responsibility for their lives onto others. But not everything is so sad. The knowledge of death helps to appreciate life, meaninglessness - to seek meaning, loneliness (separateness) - to value other people and be grateful for the time we spend together, freedom (it is also responsibility) - gives us the strength to be the author of our life.
