I'm not vegan. I eat after 6. I don't go on a keto diet. I eat white bread, pasta, potatoes and sugar, including not dinner. I drink coffee and black tea. Sometimes I drink wine or martini. I do not think BZHU. I don't go to the gym 3 times a week. And I consider my lifestyle to be healthy.
Now meet Albina.
Albina tries to lead a "healthy lifestyle", adhere to "proper nutrition" and carefully plans her menu for several days in advance. It calculates the calorie and BJU. She only buys products labeled organic and bio. Albina gave up coffee and sugar. She also does not eat meat, fish, dairy, eggs (or vice versa, she eats only seafood). No junk food, of course. Smoothies and green salads are her main diet. Albina believes that the main thing is the composition of the food, and not its taste. Albina believes that she has an iron will, she controls her life. She looks with contempt at "these weak-willed people who are ruled by their pitiful desires." After all, they are no better than animals. Albina does not go to a restaurant with friends because there, most likely, there will be no food suitable for her. And they also drink alcohol.
What do you think of Albina? Perhaps you think that Albina is great, takes care of her health, is a very strong-willed person, how could I become like Albina?
Signs of orthorexia
- You spend more than three hours a day thinking about how to eat right
- Planning your menu a few days in advance
- Food composition is more important to you than its taste.
- Your self-esteem increases when you eat right.
- You are away from any of your favorite foods because you do not think they are good for your health.
- Your diet prevents you from eating in restaurants and interferes with your interactions with family and friends.
- Feeling guilty if you have violated your diet
- If you eat right, you will have a sense of calm and a feeling that you are in complete control of your life.
- You feel superior towards people who are eating the wrong way.
- As your diet becomes healthier, your overall life becomes poorer.
- Lately, you have become more demanding of yourself.
If you find more than three signs in yourself, it can be assumed that you have orthorexia. Two or three may mean you have mild orthorexia.
Orthorexia (Orthorexia nervosa) is a modern eating disorder that occurs when a person has a fix idea: to improve their health by giving preference to certain foods. It is a serious psychological disorder. May pose a threat to health and life, due to a lack of nutrients in the body.
The name comes from the Greek words ὀρθός - "direct", "correct" and ὄρεξις - "urge to eat", "appetite". The term was coined by Dr. Stephen Bratman. He was a longtime supporter of "healthy eating" until he realized that he had become arrogant, lonely and obsessed. His realization came when one of his vegan friends suddenly announced, "It's better to eat pizza with friends than bean sprouts alone."
Orthorexia can start with an innocent desire to get rid of a chronic illness, lose weight, or simply start following a healthy diet and lifestyle. And the person goes to the Internet. There he watches videos and reads articles by self-proclaimed experts, scoops up information on "proper nutrition" and begins to put it into practice. The list of permitted products is gradually being reduced, which is formed independently, without medical indications, on the basis of all the same Internet sources. Caring for food takes more and more place in his life. He carefully reads labels in stores, looks for where it is better to order organic products, changes one food system for another even more "healthy". The taste of the food is no longer paramount, but only the composition. He stops eating outside the house. It is difficult for him to leave the house for more than 3 hours, because then he will have nothing to eat. Who knows what the food is made from in these restaurants and guests. He begins to look down on other people who, in his opinion, are limply and thoughtlessly eating everything. Gathering with friends is no longer for him. He feels guilty if, for some reason, he has eaten "something wrong" and then he can do "cleansing" for several days.
The deeper causes of orthorexia lie in the basic dissatisfaction with oneself, the basic feeling of "I am not good enough", which can be both conscious and completely unconscious. Nutritional control fuels the self-esteem of orthorexics, allows you to feel superior to other people. He literally several times a day, with every meal, has the opportunity to enjoy his superiority. It is on this basis that it becomes clear that deep down, a person is "not good enough" for himself. After all, if a person is generally satisfied with himself, he will not have the need for such a regular feeding of his self-esteem, in a sense of superiority over "these dirty animals." Also, control over nutrition creates the illusion of control over your life, which temporarily reduces anxiety, in the depth of which, by and large, there is also a feeling of inferiority.
A healthy lifestyle is great! But! If he's really healthy.
Health cannot be the meaning of life, but is only a condition for a higher quality of life. To lead a truly healthy lifestyle, learn to love yourself, listen to your body. Enjoy food and socializing with friends. Check the information, do not rush to follow the newfangled food systems - they often simply contradict each other. Choose natural and fresh food, but don't make it a cult!
