Yesterday I talked with a colleague about the psychological problems of teenagers' poor performance at school, in particular, that a child may lose self-esteem if they receive poor grades at school. Especially if the family does not provide him with adequate psychological support that helps to overcome these problems.

And I remembered how one day in the 6th or 7th grade, a new young teacher who came to us, who was apparently still burning with enthusiasm right after the teacher's college, decided to increase the academic performance of the poor, "attaching" excellent students to them. Since I was an excellent student, I was assigned one such boy.

I was quite proud of this task and the next day I came to his house to help him do his homework. His father, who met me, seemed to greeted me with joy, however, as I now think, he felt ashamed that his son was such an unsuccessful, poor student, and he felt this shame in front of me as well. This was reflected in the fact that he exaggeratedly cheerfully told me something like the following: "Well done! Let's teach him, drive him into his stupid head …"

Even then, long before I became a psychologist and just an adult, as a child, I thought that if they tell him that at home - that he has a dull head, so he does not study well.

The mechanism, in fact, is simple and straightforward - a conviction, an attitude about stupidity is transmitted to the child and is accepted by him as a given. Which is reflected in his performance in school and life in general.

Simple and straightforward.
