Maniacal is located on a continuum from borderline to psychotic personality.
A manic person often looks groovy, sociable, cheerful, with a good sense of humor, although, in fact, he has a depressive personality organization.
In the manic phase, such a person is overwhelmed with energy, very productive, passionate about work, hobbies, sociable, jokes a lot, easily becomes the soul of the company, as a result of which he is considered highly social. He is full of grandiose plans, he can forget about hunger and sleep.
It can be extremely difficult for an overexcited manic person to calm down, as a result of which he often resorts to the help of alcohol, sedatives, drugs.
Maniacal often denies that he has any sorrowful experiences, feelings of anger, resentment, guilt, hiding behind ostentatious fun, going headlong into work. However, after a certain period of time, he is exhausted, he no longer has enough strength to maintain the mask of a "shirt-guy" who is not "steamed" by any problems, and the manic begins a phase of depression, during which he may even commit suicide.
Increased energy and gaiety can soon be replaced by decompensation in the form of sudden attacks of uncontrollable hatred, self-destructive behavior (compulsive overeating, abuse of bad habits, self-harm, etc.), tearfulness and self-pity.
The main defense mechanisms of a manic personality are denial (ignoring unpleasant events or transforming them into humor) and reaction (escape from situations in which loss may threaten).
Therefore, outwardly maniacs seem superficial and frivolous. There are many such people in professions related to the entertainment industry (comedy actors, show-men, presenters).
They can avoid painful feelings through alcoholism or sexualization.
Maniacs are incapable of stable, deep relationships. for fear of loss, they often devalue their attachment to a partner.
During a psychotic breakdown, maniacs feel omnipotent, immortal, can perform actions of impulsive exhibitionism, of a violent nature, and exhibit authoritarian control.
Maniacal self-esteem is maintained through pain avoidance, high spirits, and charm.
The most dangerous thing about working with these clients is underestimating the extent of their suffering, hidden behind a charming presentation of their own personality.
For the treatment of such clients, the 12-step program is recommended.
In connection with artistry, a manic personality is often confused with a hysterical one. To properly differentiate manic from hysteroid, the therapist must carefully examine his childhood. Maniacal childhood is characterized by disturbed, traumatic separation: deaths, properly unmourned, frequent divorces, moving, when a person did not have time to adapt to new living conditions. Parents of a man with a manic personality in childhood often underestimated the degree of their child's suffering, ignored his psychological state, and reacted to tragic situations with denial. Also, there will be no hysterical preoccupation with one's gender identity in the history of mania.
Maniacal is often confused with the narcissist because of his grandiose plans, however, these two personality types have different motives for grandiosity. Maniacalu needs grandeur to maintain a sense of security and escape from inner experiences, while a narcissist needs grandeur for his image, maintaining personal prestige.
A maniac can devalue a person out of fear of attachment, and a narcissist out of fear of threatening his own vanity.
Due to workaholism and compulsive behavior, a manic person can be confused with an obsessive-compulsive person. Obsessive-compulsive individuals are very concerned about social desirability, the correct image of themselves in the eyes of others, while a maniacal often neglects the framework of decency, can participate in various orgies and drunken fights, speak obscenely, behave, at times, even immoral.
Jim Carrey is a manic person. He became famous as a funny guy and a great comedian. But not everyone knows that, in reality, he was often depressed. The woman with whom he was in a relationship for a long time accused him of infidelity, irascibility and the fact that he infected her with a sexually transmitted disease. She had a strong dependence on the actor and committed suicide after their breakup.
