The era of emotional intelligence

Today is an era of heightened interest in emotional intelligence. If "ordinary" intelligence is about operating with abstract ideas, concepts and symbols, then "emotional" is about the ability to masterfully handle emotions and feelings. Emotional intelligence has many components. One of the most popular schemes is the one proposed by Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence. According to his concept, everything, in one way or another, begins with awareness of oneself and the ability to name one's states. ("Self-awareness"). What you can read correctly in yourself, you can also recognize in others ("Social sensitivity"). After the discrimination of emotions has been adjusted, you can move on to managing emotions - first, again, in oneself ("Self-control"), and over time - in relations with others ("Relationship Management").

Emotion formulas

How do you master emotional literacy? Just like in school, it all starts with cheat sheets and aids. In Robert Plutchik's wheel of emotions, fundamental emotions are highlighted. Their different level of intensity can describe a whole fan of feelings and moods. Scientists still have discrepancies as to which emotions should be classified as basic - that is, innate and universal for any culture. But for a start, Plutchik's wheel of emotions is fine.

The main emotions, according to Plutchik, are joy, sadness, fear, trust, expectation, surprise, anger, displeasure. They are medium in intensity, and are located in the second line of the circle from the center.

When you're trying to become aware of your emotions, don't worry that you haven't done this before. "How do I know how I feel?" Let the wisdom of your body do the work for you. The main thing is not to fuss and give yourself some time. You will "recognize" a word that suits your condition quickly enough.

To practice, sometimes in any situation, even the most routine, say to yourself: “Stop. What am I feeling right now? " and try to "grope" your inner state. You will be amazed at how calmness often shines in the background of even your most intense excitement. And how much in a seemingly neutral state, the flickering of either growing anxiety, or rolling joyful anticipation.
