Often, people traumatized in childhood wonder - how does change happen? What needs to be done specifically? Where to find support to move forward? After all, childhood cannot be changed.
The questions are great, they mean that the person wants change and is trying to do something for them. I will try to answer briefly and to the point.
In the past, in childhood, the human psyche can be traumatized:
- event, situation
- environment, or relationships
The parents or the people who take care of them, take care of them, bring up are responsible for the child. Even if an accidentally traumatic event occurs, the adult's task is to minimize the consequences of the trauma, that is, in any case, the trauma itself or its consequences is the responsibility of the adult. Therefore, I view childhood trauma in terms of the parent / caregiver relationship.
If the mental trauma is inflicted, the adults did not cope, or even were the culprits of the trauma themselves, it is possible to compensate for it, but already in the present tense. Important: trauma has consequences in the form of fixation or deviation in the formation of mental structures. And this is good news for those who want to change - the structures of the psyche are with us now, so in the present you can work with them and change them.
To work is to allow yourself to experience pain, fear, resentment, anger from trauma, that is, feelings that adults often forbid or do not notice.
To work is to find the consequences of trauma in the form of beliefs, attitudes towards oneself, towards the world, towards others, expectations from oneself and people.
To work is to get support, understanding, attention, and in this new environment, allow yourself a different behavior, manifestation of feelings, get the skill of such communication that was not there in childhood.
The past cannot be changed, but its consequences can be changed. And start right here and now.
