What do you think psychotherapy is not? The question sounds a little strange, but how many illusions there are around the very concept of "psychotherapy"! And the idea of psychologists for many people is rather "vague" and false, a little everyday and covered with a veil of secrets.
Famous psychotherapists have said this about psychotherapy:
“Psychotherapy is not a substitute for our life, it is its dress rehearsal” (Irwin Yalom).
“Psychoanalysis is not just a conversation with a psychoanalyst. This is a conversation with your own and unconscious “I”, with which it is much more difficult to come to an agreement”(Inessa Astakhova).
“Psychotherapy will not cure you with different tactics and tools. She heals by the relationship that is built between two people, and the contribution of each to these relationships”(Alexander Makhovikov).
So what is psychotherapy not?
- Brain correctness. This opinion is inaccurate and incomplete. The psychotherapist works not only with the brain and perception of the surrounding picture, but also with the feelings and the body. Psychotherapy cannot include one thing, in which case it will not be whole and complete.
- A magical relief from all problems. Life in one way or another consists of a certain range of problems. And you cannot get rid of them by visiting a psychotherapist. You need to learn to treat them differently.
- Getting rid of suffering and feelings. There is always a place in life for experiences and strong shocks. You can't make a person stop worrying, don't cry and don't get angry. Life without feelings is impossible, this is death! And experts in this matter are a pathologist and a gravedigger.
- A magic pill for everything or a magic pendel. A psychotherapist cannot do something incredible for someone, life will not improve or change after the session. You need to work hard, long and patiently on this.
The psychotherapist does not give direct advice, he can only provide advice based on his own general vision of the situation. But what and how to do a person decides on his own. You cannot make a choice for someone: with whom to live, what kind of partner should be, what profession to choose, whom to love … No! This choice is up to everyone. This is everyone's individual responsibility!
Psychotherapy is not pleasure, most likely it is a path of suffering and torment. The soul will hurt, there will be painful memories of all life events that were previously simply supplanted by other thoughts and denied. Now all this needs to be experienced again! It is thanks to this approach that the healing of the psyche takes place. An excellent parallel is an old Soviet cartoon in which the main character, jumping into a tub of boiling water, got out rejuvenated. So it is in psychotherapy!
It will be difficult, but on this thorny path there is always a psychotherapist nearby. You cannot be alone in life with your problems and experiences. The psychotherapist helps to live all experiences and cope with pain.
The process of psychotherapy can be compared to a mother's comfort and support when a baby breaks his knee. Any wound takes time to heal and heal. And here, too, there will not be instant relief, but a sense of deliverance and rehabilitation will surely come. It is very important to go all this way to the end with a psychotherapist. It is thanks to his support that you can get a deep and more effective result without failures. But regressions are a manifestation of indicators of incomplete therapy.
In any case, the perception of psychotherapy should be without white and light spots, with illusions and stereotypes it is always necessary and possible to fight.
