Binge eating is known to refer to destructive, self-harming behavior. Self-injurious behavior is self-harm, directing anger towards yourself.

A person prone to overeating usually has a very high vulnerability to criticism, a tendency to self-blame. His behavior is often sacrificial, pleasing, in him there is a need to earn approval even to the detriment of his interests.

Once a client, let's call her Maria, approached me with compulsive overeating. After the session, I gave her homework: keeping a diary of automatic thoughts.

The result was very interesting. From Mary's story:

“In the evening, when I came home from work, I cut myself a large piece of cake and ate it in silence, immersed in my worries. Many unpleasant scenes of the past day flashed before my eyes: how the leader scolded me, but I could not defend myself; how she was forced to listen to a long chat from a colleague, because of which she did not have time to complete the annual report; then there was dissatisfaction with my husband, who locked himself in the toilet with the phone to avoid talking to me. I felt pathetic, weak, unable to defend my boundaries, to tell others that I do not like, to act the way I want. Then I first felt angry at my piece of cake, which I wanted to throw against the wall along with the plate, then angry at myself that I was such a fool, worthless … Never before had I so clearly felt anger towards myself. And at that moment the thought flashed through my head: “ I will eat until I burst, until I kill myself with an excess of flour and sweets! " I started eating the cake with renewed vigor, then went to the kitchen and cut another piece."

This important awareness revealed the triggers that triggered overeating: situations where she could not build boundaries, pushed her needs into the background in order to gain the approval of others … As a result, all the unexpressed aggression of Mary was redirected to herself, taking an already destructive form.

Overeating performed the function of mental anesthesia, on the one hand, and on the other, it was a method of self-punishment.

Our further work was based on increasing the woman's self-esteem, working with her dysfunctional beliefs about herself, forming a new model of response in trigger situations.
