Depersonalization means a feeling of loss of one's own personality, it is often combined with derealization, a sense of alienation from the environment. But about derealization later)
A person develops an altered perception of his own personality, which is a symptom of a psychopathological syndrome.
In terms of psychotherapeutic work, this is one of the most difficult disorders.
There are five main reasons for depersonalization
The first reason. The hardest part is a mental disorder. Depersonalization manifests itself in various forms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder in its depressive phase. It can be one of the symptoms of a developing psychopathological condition.
The second reason, this is a stressful situation. It so happens that depersonalization is provoked by intense mental or intellectual work without rest, any information overload, protracted interpersonal conflicts.
Third reason, traumatic situations that a person has experienced recently. Depersonalization symptoms can also appear in mentally healthy people as a reaction to the experience of trauma, but they pass quickly enough, after a short time.
Fourth reason … The use of psychotropic drugs. Depersonalization can manifest itself as a side effect after taking psychotropics.
Fifth reason, drug addiction - symptoms of depersonalization, can be caused by the use of narcotic and other psychoactive substances, including marijuana.
In my psychotherapeutic practice, there were quite a few such examples when, after using any psychoactive substance, a person developed depersonalization and he turned to a psychologist with a request to check him for normality).
As a result, I want to say a few words about the fact that depersonalization is essentially a defense mechanism that tries to protect us in various traumatic situations, intoxication or stress-related severe mental disorders.
In my practice, from the general characteristics, such symptoms are most often found in people with anxious and suspicious character.
In the following articles I will talk about its types and psychotherapy.
