In December, I conducted a stream for the company about summing up the results of 2020 and planning for 2021.

One of the most frequent questions in that stream was: "Where can I get motivation to achieve the set goals?"

How interesting it turns out: there is motivation to write goals, but there is no motivation to achieve written goals?..

Hmmm.. How so?

Let's try to figure out for a start what this very motivation is.

Here's what a simple googling says on the matter. (Yes, yes, everything has been in Google for a long time and I urge you to use it😉)

Motivation (from Lat. Movēre "to move") - motivation to action; psychophysiological process that controls human behavior, sets its direction, organization, activity and stability; a person's ability to actively satisfy their needs.

In simple terms, when we talk about motivation, we most often mean the presence or absence of energy (and more often mental) for any action. That is, we mean our psycho-emotional state, which we recognize at the level of the body, as apathy, laziness, lack of resources, etc., or vice versa, as energy, desire to move, do something, etc.

But why does this energy disappear?

Let's google another important term.

* Motive * (lat. Moveo "move") is a material or ideal object that represents a terminal (final) * value * for the subject, which determines the direction of his activity, the achievement of which is * the meaning of activity *.

In this definition, there is one of the frequent reasons for the loss of that very energy, which we call lack of motivation - the loss or lack of meaning.

It so happens that at some point we cease to understand "Why am I doing all this?" She seemed to be writing goals for herself and everything was so beautiful and inspired, and then bam and it’s not at all clear why this is all.

What for in general to do something, if there is a warm pastel and tea or cocoa. 😂

This happens if we choose fairly general standard wording like "I want to be healthy" or "I want to have X money." Well, cool goals, agree?

But for some reason there is no motivation to reach them.. how is that?

The paradox is that often the rigid SMART target does not work either. There energy is often lost even at the stage of the formulation itself, because the impulse of interest and inspiration is lost and the rational brain begins to work hard and attempts to predict the future "I want to be healthy by visiting the nearest gym 2 times a week for 1 hour for six months." what and how I will do the next six months. 2020 has shown this more than ever. Fig you, not the gym, stay at home in a mask and wash your hands. 😂

And what if instead of trying to concretize everything as much as possible at the start, try to answer yourself a few additional questions about your goal. For example:

- What does it mean to me to be healthy? How is this expressed?

- Why is it important to me? Why else?

- What will become possible for me when I have X money?

- …

For energy to appear, it is important to find your value for this goal, to feel the emotional response of words. It is important to set aside the generally accepted beautiful language and acknowledge the importance and value of what you choose as the direction of your life.

With the help of my coach, I have identified for myself one important indicator of a "correctly" formed goal - this is interest. If I feel interested in what I formulate as a goal, then I am on the right track.

How are you motivated to achieve your life goals?:)
