It happens that clients in the first sessions ask why long-term therapy is needed? Why can't problems be solved in a few consultations?
Some, indeed, can. If a client comes with a superficial, situational problem, which is based on a lack of understanding of certain mental processes or lack of communication skills, as a result of which it is difficult for a person to find a compromise with a partner, then from 1 to 10 consultations are enough.
But if a person's problems are associated with a lack of a sense of basic security or with an unformed healthy attachment, problems with identity, an experience of loss, then, of course, long painstaking work is needed. Why? Because the human psyche is inert, and if a person has lived for many years, guided by distorted attitudes, then their change, the formation of a new way of thinking, emotional response and actions, cannot be quick.
If it were possible to reprogram the psyche in 10 sessions, probably already most people in this world would be happy.
Psychologists undergo at least 120 hours of personal therapy during the training process. With a frequency of 1 time per week, it takes 2, 5-3 years. Why, if you could solve problems in 10 sessions?
The analogy with losing weight is very close to me. There are many fast and effective diets, but they all have a short-term effect. And we can get a good and stable result only by making healthy food and sports our new way of life.
The same is true in psychotherapy - you need to build new neural connections - to change the way of thinking, change interfering attitudes, and form new skills of contact with the world. And all this takes time.
Another question is that people always want a “magic pill”, which is why “karma cleaners”, charlatans, as well as “specialists” who promise to quickly save you from all problems are so in demand. But if you understand the mechanisms by which the psyche functions, you can always make an informed choice.
