In short-term strategic therapy, the training program includes a seminar on problem solving - this is coaching. The work is structured somewhat differently than in psychotherapy.

Sometimes, when working with a client, you have to move from one format of work to another format.

This happened in one recent case. It is not unique, but quite typical.

“I want to be an innovator and I want to change a lot in business. Previously, I succeeded, but now I cannot”- the client-businessman shared his thoughts.

In the process of studying the situation, it turned out that the client identifies himself with his business.

When a businessman identifies himself with his business, this is a very dangerous position. Why dangerous? Because it is limited. Do you think it's good when a person thinks I = my business?

In this case, the person merges and identifies with his business. "I will not survive the financial collapse and change in social status!" - it's just a cry from the heart. What can this position lead to? Let's imagine a business crash situation. What does this mean? This also means the collapse of the personality itself.

We are dealing in this case with a conceptualized I.

The businessman makes a single whole with the story he created about himself and his business. He is trying, being inside this story, to find a solution to his problems. However, the reality is that the real solution to the problem within this story simply does not exist. Thus, we are dealing with conceptualized self-knowledge that looks like a tight cage, and repetitive behavior and inflexible actions are a natural consequence and predictable result of such self-knowledge.

What prevents you from making innovative decisions in business? How can this be done if "I" is my business, and my business is "I" myself? From this position of merger, you cannot become an innovator and change a lot. The view of oneself and the world is limited. The world is limited to its own business and this leads to the fact that there is no panoramic vision of the situation and many opportunities that surround us are not visible.

It is necessary to enter the meta position, it is called “I am the observer”. Only from this position you can see all the opportunities that the world provides, without limiting the blinders of your business. This is already an excessive and creative position. Merging with a business makes it impossible to create. The position "I am the observer" allows you to go beyond the boundaries of directly experienced sensory experience.

To become successful, both in life and in business, you need to increase the degree of your psychological flexibility and reduce the degree of your psychological rigidity. For a business to grow and develop, it is necessary that the businessman himself grows and develops, otherwise there will be a dead end and a crisis.
