Once a senior friend told me about "rubber product number 2" - who does not know, that's how condoms were called in the USSR. The essence of the story boiled down to the fact that if such a product was "torn", the comrade, on the one hand, experienced incredible stress, but at the same time the adrenaline rush caused a vivid feeling of "exciting adventure". The question "what will happen now", despite the real threat, tickled my nerves pleasantly.
Surely, you have also repeatedly noticed that there is stress that mobilizes our body: it gives strength, energy and a desire to act, and there is stress that provokes a feeling of hopelessness, from which we slide into depression. So, stress is divided into "good" - eustress and "bad" - distress.
Any stress caused by an emergency or emotional shock is an increased nervous tension - a cumulative reaction of the body to non-standard events, which is accompanied by the release of hormones. Along with stress, the "four horsemen of the apocalypse" come into your life: adrenaline, norepinephrine, cortisol and prolactin.
That is, in fact, these very "riders" peacefully graze inside you constantly, and by themselves in normal quantities, these hormones perform an important function in the body. However, with constant or prolonged stress, their overabundance can cause serious disturbances.
Adrenaline is called the "fear hormone". Under severe stress, he brings with him a "friend" - the "rage hormone" norepinephrine. Therefore, the so-called passive-defensive reaction arises, when a person begins to behave aggressively from fear.
On the one hand, these hormones protect our nervous system, on the other hand, their excess drains the internal reserves of the body. That is why we feel very tired after stress.
If during stress you have a desire to "seize" this stress, blame it on cortisol. It is the excess of this hormone that is responsible for the extra pounds on the butt and waist.
The female hormone prolactin is extremely important for the body and is involved in the regulation of metabolism, and its excess, provoked by prolonged stress, leads to a violation of ovulation.
So how do you deal with stress?
Ideally, stressful situations should be avoided, but if you live on the same planet as me, then this is impossible. Forget it and take it for granted. A good emotional shake-up (essentially a short eustress) can even work for you. A state of tension, when you have a lot of things to do, and you are constantly balancing "on the edge", can cause pleasant sensations and increase self-esteem - I'm cool! I'm in demand! I can!
Prolonged prolonged stress (distress), provoked by negative emotions, the source of which is beyond your control, can cause serious disturbances in the body.
Of course, everyone's resistance to stress is different. And where one sees a minute hitch, the other draws a global problem. However, there are a number of general rules for everyone that you can use to minimize the unpleasant effects of stress.
- Change your attitude to the situation … This phrase used to annoy me a lot. I saw all situations in black and white. Gradually, with age and experience, I realized that the plus or minus sign in many situations can be neutralized. If you are stuck in traffic, this is, of course, stress and a minus. But how you behave in this situation may well be a plus sign. Standing in a traffic jam, you can call relatives and friends who are constantly short of time. You can listen to an audiobook. You can learn a foreign language. You can revise your schedule and resolve half of your work questions over the phone. After all, you can safely touch up your makeup and have a cup of coffee. Your calmness and rational approach to a situation that you cannot change will have a positive effect on your subsequent actions. You will not get out of the traffic jam in a rumpled dress, with smudges of mascara and tufts of torn hair, but with fresh makeup, a serene smile and a new business strategy (after all, we already said that stress activates thought processes).
- Change the situation … There are situations that can and should be changed. The main thing is not to be cowardly. Get away from someone who offends you, humiliates and does not appreciate. Don't be afraid to hit back. Do not be silent and do not bury your head in the sand if you have the strength to respond. Yes, use norepinephrine and let the fear hormone release from your offenders.
- To change yourself. You learned to walk, talk and cook. Many have even elevated these skills to the level of art. So why don't you learn to manage your emotions and reactions? These are also practical skills and can be learned too. Acting courses to learn how to speak in public. Drawing courses to relax and distract yourself. Foreign language courses to form new neural connections and finally chat with the foreigner you like on vacation. Extreme driving or kickboxing courses (great thing - I advise everyone) to let off some steam. Regardless of your material condition, you can always find a way to change yourself - there would be a desire.
A friend of mine recently wrote to me on Facebook: "Life without stress - like underpants without an elastic band - it seems to be, but what's the use of them?" So don't be afraid of stress - it adds brightness and piquancy to your life, but don't let it take over.
You and only you decide how to react to those situations that life "throws" at you. So, which way to choose in the situation with "rubber product number two" is up to you too. But it would be nice not to forget about fourth way dealing with stress - to calculate the situation in advance in order, if possible, to minimize it even before he comes to visit you.
