For centuries, great minds have been asking questions of happiness and the purpose of being. Without going into the territory of philosophers, artists and poets, I will focus on the more tangible aspects of such an endless concept as "happiness":
- pleasure and a state of intense joy
- awareness, meaningfulness, absorption in activities
The hedonistic understanding of happiness
The activity of our psyche is not limited solely to receiving momentary pleasure, but the sensory component is difficult to underestimate. Everyone can remember episodes from their life when the perception of the same situation changed under the influence of a charge of positive emotions received from watching an amazing movie / performance / show, contemplating incredible beauties, tasting delicious food and drinks, physical activity, and other sources of pleasure.
How long can you maintain a state of euphoria with pleasure? Not very long, I'm afraid, even taking into account the individual characteristics of each individual person. Not only must the feeling of pleasure be constantly fueled by external stimuli, it is still extremely insatiable and fleeting: the effect of novelty quickly passes, a person gets used to these sensations, and more and more "doses" of so-called doping are needed, whatever it may be.
After all, pleasure experienced at the sensory level does not involve thinking in this process. The state of satiety in the absence of more complexly organized experiences often leads to apathy, boredom, a feeling of emptiness, meaninglessness, and loss.
Happiness as a result of meaningfulness and engagement
We can get a special type of satisfaction from activities in which we ourselves see meaning. Despite the fact that this process is not always accompanied by positive emotions.
An architect designing a building, or an athlete performing seemingly monotonous stereotypical exercises, or a summer resident ridding his site of weeds.
Each person, probably, has their own activities that captivate him to such an extent that time flies by. In this state, a person may feel that they are using their full potential and creativity. At the same time, doubts, indignation, anger, excitement can visit, but definitely not boredom and indifference.
Have you ever caught yourself thinking - “I don’t feel what I want… I don’t know what I need to be happy”?
Everyday routine, stereotyped actions, automatic thoughts and reactions to what is happening around us often alienate us from ourselves, our needs, our capabilities.
Awareness of the present moment helps a person to better understand his own needs.
Awareness is a process in which we observe our actions, feelings, thoughts, sensations in the body, this is the experience of the given moment.
For a better understanding of yourself, you can perform, for example, the following simple exercises:
1. Make a list of 10 things you like to do;
2. Write a story beginning with the words: "In the next life I will …".
Try to let the "inner censor" go for a smoke while doing these exercises, trusting your intuition:-)
