Psychoanalysis has never forgotten and will not forget Freud's ideas, although today the Method has changed a lot. It was changed by the history of the twentieth century and technological progress; postmodernism and ideas of existentialism; Object Relationship Theory and the Psychology of the Self. Today, relational psychoanalysis (relational) is becoming promising, having absorbed all the most working and living in the Method.
However, psychoanalysis remains elitist, and its theory and methods are obscure. Therefore, there are so many jokes about psychoanalysis - as a defense against the presence of something inaccessible. The most offensive thing is that it is difficult to share the experience of psychoanalysis - its language, metaphors and descriptions are complex and ambiguous.
This does not mean that everything should be simplified. This means you should be clearer. I am in favor of finding intelligible explanations and looking for a common language. That is why the idea of the Conference arose.
Does popular psychoanalysis stand a chance? Can a non-initiate who asks for help use the Metaphors and symbols of the Method? - I'm sure yes.
What are the benefits of psychoanalysis?
The strength of the Method lies in what the psychoanalyst thinks about while listening. And what was he thinking about when the patient left his office and went to do other things.
Let me explain with an example.
Think about situations when someone emotionally told you something. Do you think that person was influenced by what you quietly thought about while listening to him? You played something in your head and it influenced the other. - It was so? You are silent, but what you think about is reflected in the situation and decides everything.
A similar thing happens in psychoanalysis. The analyst's thoughts are extremely important. You can even say that this is the most important thing. The strength here is that the analyst lets his thoughts float freely - and then the mirror neurons are included in the work without interference (this is not really thinking). It is both the moment and the process of truth. The process cannot be controlled or caused artificially; the analyst must be honest with himself, which means that he must know himself as best as possible. Thus, the patient's mirror neurons receive healing impulses from the therapist's mirror neurons - "data transmission" occurs at the deepest (unconscious) level. Consciousness allows this to happen. The psychoanalyst devotes a lot of time to expanding his understanding of mental processes in himself, so that nothing interferes with freely listening to his patient. Behavioral and cognitive (knowledge) correction gives very little - if new circuits of neurons are not formed.
Psychoanalysis is a very powerful technique that can influence the creation of new brain structures. This happens through the emotional (both conscious and unconscious) and cognitive (conscious) therapist-patient relationship.
What is the psychoanalyst thinking?
The analyst's thinking during a session is also called "free floating attention." The therapist thinks about: your and your inner objects; your and your psychological defenses; about the split-off parts of your self and yours; about the unconscious - pre-reflective, affective and unconfirmed; about trauma and distortion of perception; about what is happening between him and you; about what is happening with the setting (rules of work); about something of your own, which probably does not concern you; about something of your own that probably concerns you; about what in your story applies to him. Here's a kaleidoscope. And the analyst understands all this. And all in order to be useful to you with your mirror neurons, not to break the connection with you, and if you suddenly break it, then understand how it happened and look for a way to recover. And if you are already ready - find the words to explain everything to you and teach you how to use it. Not easy - but real.
Psychoanalysis is not just that we met to talk, remember and reason. Everything is much more complicated. But it is also easier - because this is the process of "free swimming" we experience when we are very small. It was in this process that our brain was formed. This is the primary relationship. Where the emotional state and emotional connection are of great importance.
We expand the interior space using external objects. And if something was unfinished in this (there were not enough external objects), this can be compensated for by psychotherapy in psychoanalysis. Object relations theory helps to understand and correct all this.
Therefore, psychoanalysis is really the art of relationships.
