Book as a medicine. For some mental disorders, reading is "prescribed" - and it helps

Bibliotherapy - (treatment by reading certain books) has been known since ancient times. Greek works were aimed at reasoning about basic things and experiences: about the future, about happiness, about love, about family life, about self-development through difficulties and experience.

Numerous studies have long proven that the use of specially selected books can have a serious impact on the emotional state of people.

But at what point does reading become therapy?

Science believes that a book will work as a medicine if you are imbued with the feelings of the character so much that you forget about yourself.

Why this development option is good for a person: there are no imposed concrete actions in the book (something that must be done in reality), there is a general meaning of the text and each reader will take something of his own from there.

For each question, problem, important experience, you can pick up several books where the heroes encounter a similar situation and overcome it, or not, which is also an option for reading therapy (with how "not to do")

There are two basic forms of bibliotherapy:

1. The client simply reads the text that was given to him in the library. The specialist recommended in which books the hero has the same problems as the reader.

2. The form of influence between the therapist and the reader. First, they read the book aloud, and then discuss it.

The first option is more available not only because it is more accessible: apart from the book, nothing is needed. The point is that our perception of the text is unique. Each of us will make something different from the same paragraph.

While reading, each of us can use the text solely for our own personal purposes. The point of therapy is precisely this - to highlight the actual, the sick. A book read at the age of 15 and 35 is perceived as two different works, but in fact, we have changed, and the book has only slightly "worn out" since that time.

That is, the essence and all meanings of the book largely depend not on the writer, but on the reader.

The wonderful world of the book is what we build in our heads, relying on our experience, feelings, mental characteristics, and only with some participation of the author.

How it works…

The first positive effect of the book has to do with speaking. It is difficult to cope with a situation if we do not know the right words to express deep feelings and confused thoughts. In the book, we find the necessary metaphors, accurate observations, thoughtful comments that you can always try on yourself.

The second factor is a new look at things. Fictional stories help the reader to rethink the events of his own life, to make them less disturbing, less traumatic.

From the point of view of therapists, "treatment" takes place in three ways.

1. Identification: a connection with the character of the work is created. Here the problems and goals of the character close to us are recognized.

2. Catharsis. Emotional release in response to the text. We are imbued with the feelings of the hero, empathize with him, rejoice or sad with him.

3. Awareness of the problems presented in the text and how it can be used in real life. At this point, the reader can recognize the similarities between herself and the character. Here you can decide to act in the same way as the hero, or vice versa - try not to fall into the same trap.

4. Generalization. It is important to realize that you are not alone with your mysterious drama - people always have the same problems: separation, loss, love, rudeness, inhumanity … This should have a more optimistic mood.

And how can all this heal …

The point is in the peculiarities of our brain. It turns out that he perceives a fictional story in much the same way as real experience. Scientists have found that the power of imagination helps to overcome trauma, stress and fear. And by living such situations in a safe environment, we learn to cope with them.

What to read and how to choose a book …

Option when books are specially written for bibliotherapy. This is popular science and clinical literature. Psychologists and scientists make lists of books recommended for various diseases.

The next option is to use fiction. When choosing which we need to take into account several factors:

• These are characters or situations in which they find themselves, similar to the characteristics or situations of those for whom we are selecting the book. Here we are looking for something similar in behavior and values, rather than external similarity.

In some cases, you can pick up negative characters, where the characters are opposite to the client in actions and important values. It makes sense to discuss with readers what they think is wrong in the way antiheroes behave, to work according to the principle of "polarity".

• We take into account whether there is a positive change in the book or the end of the situation.

• There are answers or options in response to a reader's request. This experience is then analyzed.
