Why be able to recognize your emotions?
First, unlived emotions can enhance physiological responses to stress, creating conditions for the development of psychosomatic diseases. They can also lead to unconscious behavior and reactions to certain events. For example, when emotions accumulate for a long time and turn into an uncontrollable intense emotional outburst.
Secondly, then, that everything that is not consciously goes into the "Shadow" and moves us, and what is brought to the level of awareness can be understood and more manageable
Why are we not aware of some of our emotions?
Most often, a defensive reaction and magical thinking are triggered: if I don't feel these emotions, then nothing seems to happen. For example, if I don’t feel sadness, then it’s as if I didn’t lose anything.
Inhibitions on feelings can also lead us to emotional gaps. Everyone has their own. Someone supplants a feeling of anger, someone of joy, sadness or fear. This is a habit that has been instilled over the years and comes from childhood. These feelings were condemned in the family or could be punished for them, and then the child decides not to show this feeling either to himself or to others. This decision most often persists in adulthood.
The cause may also be alexithemia - a psychological characteristic of a person, consisting in a decrease or lack of the ability to recognize, differentiate and express emotional experiences and bodily sensations.
But unconscious emotions do not magically evaporate anywhere, they continue to live in the body, thoughts and our actions.
How do you recognize your emotions?
- Ask yourself how I feel at the level of the body. Heaviness in the chest, flushing of the cheeks, tension or relaxation, clenched jaws, “butterflies” in the abdomen, heart palpitations, numbness, trembling in the legs, arms, voice - all these can be indicators of emotion.
- Analyze your thoughts. What am I thinking at the moment. And at the level of logic, check what emotions can be associated with this thought process.
- Analyze your actions. How I acted, and how I think what emotions moved me. Or what do I want to do, and what do I think, what is the emotion behind it?
- What is the name of what I feel? Give emotion a name. And allow yourself to feel it.
Emotions are a signaling system that gives us information about our reactions to events, to others. Understanding emotions is one of the key factors in understanding yourself. It is important to give yourself permission to feel absolutely everything that is felt inside and to decide what to manifest outward and what not. Having recognized their emotions, everyone can independently decide for themselves what I want and can do with this feeling.
