An unsolved dream is like an unopened letter

E. Fromm

I really like to talk about dreams. Curiosity captures me, surprise at unexpected discoveries makes me feel awe. In my youth, I perceived dreams as magical journeys and adventures. I was an ordinary schoolgirl or student with a bunch of everyday worries and joys, but in a dream I could turn into a brave male conqueror, participate in magical courts and communicate with bears. Sometimes I waited for the night to finally see something worthwhile. I thought that was the case for everyone. As I grew older and more professional, my attitude towards dreams changed dramatically. Only interest has not changed. In this post, I want to share my observations on dream work.

So, at first, in order to unravel the meaning of my own dreams, I used various dream books and folk beliefs like this "I dreamed of a fish - to pregnancy." Then I was still a student. I treated this as a special psychological experiment, so I recorded my observations in writing. Unfortunately, this method did not give any results, and even more led me away from the meaning and content of my dreams. Moreover, this practice has led to an increase in anxiety and fear levels. I stopped trusting myself, because I was very afraid that something was wrong in my dream. If you open some simple dream book and look through it, you will see that all the predictions in it boil down to several things: the state of health, material condition and the state of family relationships. These predictions fall into two categories: either everything will be good, or everything will be bad. In general, this rather simplified and ineffective method of interpreting dreams encouraged me to look further.

Following the new and colorful signs and calls on the books, I began to study esoteric literature. Many books that talked about astral travel, either inspired me or made me feel animal fear. The stories that while traveling in a dream, one can "get stuck" in some unknown and invisible worlds, led my brain, still young in this respect, into confusion. Each esoteric tradition required a radical change in outlook and lifestyle, and this did not suit me, because during this period a new laminated psychology diploma appeared on my desk and the scientific worldview had already grown stronger, and I began to think critically. The good thing that I learned from esoteric sources was a sense of the value and significance of events in a dream. Gradually, the question began to ripen in me: how to bring two worlds closer together: the world of reality and the world of dreams, how to build a bridge between them, through which encrypted messages in a dream can be understood and received in a vigorous state of consciousness.

For myself, I realized that dreams are a special kind of psychic reality. I would even say that a dream is more real than anything that we habitually call "real". The reality of sleep is in its freedom of expression and in its emotional content. And that symbols in a dream and emotions that we experience in a dream can become a kind of bridge between the worlds of reality and sleep. Dreams are rich in symbolic content, full of clues, solutions and useful information. The question is, how can we get this information from sleep?

The search for an answer led me to the work of the wonderful psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. He added another level to the structure of the psyche - the archetypal one. This has a lot to do with the symbolism of dreams. There are several levels of dreaming:

1 - household level. These dreams are clear and simple, they contain events of the recent past, and they do not evoke an emotional response.

2 - cultural level. Such a dream is rich in images and incomprehensible events, everything in it is inverted and illogical. Emotions go wild. One can experience both indescribable horror and joyful ecstasy. In such dreams, there are many clues and solutions to existing problems.

3- archetypal level. Such dreams can be called extraterrestrial. Perhaps the feeling of being in touch with something greater than you. At this level, solutions to the problem of self-identification and separation are possible. You will remember such a dream by the feeling of something meaningful and incomprehensible, new and old at the same time.

In order for the messages from dreams to become more and more understandable, it is important to start gradually working with the individual symbolism of dreams. The quickest way to work through sleep is to seek the help of a psychologist. But, if there is a desire to constantly engage in the development of the connection between the meanings of dreams and your conscious life, then you can start working on dreams.

The first thing to do is start remembering your dreams. The first obstacle to understanding our dreams is the natural property of our brain to "erase" sleep when we wake up. To do this, you just start to want to remember your dream. You just form the desire "I want to remember the dream." After a few nights, you will definitely remember your dream. Then start writing down your dreams. At first they will not be clear, but your unconscious will gradually give more and more symbols, more signs, meanings and solutions. Over time, the connection between dreams and reality will become stronger, and messages from dreams will become close and understandable to you.

In addition to individual symbolism, general cultural symbols and signs can be found in dreams, most often they are found in archetypal dreams. The meaning of such symbols can be found in a good encyclopedia of signs and symbols in different cultural traditions.

Take the time to pay attention to your dreams, they are worth it.
