The technique "I am a musical instrument" is designed to explore various facets of personality, to find hidden potential

Instruction.

Close your eyes, sit back and relax. Monitor your breathing for about a minute. Walk with your mind's eye on your body. What part of the body do you feel so that you can say: “I am here. It really is I. Most often this is the area of the heart and solar plexus. However, you can catch this feeling anywhere. Try to keep your attention in this area. Now start from this point to develop the image of a musical instrument. Let it grow out of this place, perhaps it will happen quickly, perhaps not soon. Don't try to force the process. Give him a chance to be born and come out. Perhaps at first you will see some unstructured elements that are difficult to correlate with a musical instrument known to you, let this process take place, do not rush to mold it to the images you know. Watch the generation process. A child is formed during the nine months before he sees the world. Let your musical instrument really take shape. Watch it take on more and more distinct contours … Check it out How does it sound? What is the first note it hits? Watch what happens? If you can truly say, “Yes, it’s me,” you may want to get up and start moving. If so, do it, without opening your eyes, slowly get up from your place and begin to move, embodying the flow of inner experiences and images. Try not to start from the images of everyday ideas about your musical instrument, for it is not him, but you, and therefore let him open his body, his form. Try to avoid the desire to do or do anything, let the movement and actions happen by themselves. At a certain moment you will feel that the movement does not develop further. Repeat your movement and start sounding. Let body movement and sound merge in absolute harmony. You can open your eyes. What do you want to do? Tell us about this experience.

In some cases, clients report the birth of a non-existent musical instrument, most often this image is the product of the "gluing" of several different musical instruments (for example, a violin making a guitar sound, a drumming saxophone). However, more often you have to deal with well-known musical instruments.

Let me give you an example.

Woman piano (detail)

For about five minutes, the lower part of the woman's face is relaxed, however, the forehead is somewhat tense. At a certain moment, the tension subsides, and the expression on the face reflects that something really began to happen, something exciting, something that transformed the face. After the offer to get up, the woman sits motionless for about a minute, after which the right hand is extended forward, following this movement, the right leg is pulled to the side, after which the woman stands up. At first, carefully moving around the room, the woman makes movements similar to the movements of a frightened conductor, performing for the first time in front of a respectable audience. Over time, the movements become more energetic, the steps are decisive. The body sways from side to side. Hands continue to conduct, then make sweeping circular movements. Up to this point, the upper body is more active. Within a minute, the movements do not change, after which the pelvis turns on, making a slight sway, developing into strong blows from side to side. At the end, the woman makes a strong drawl. According to the participant: “At first, an image appeared that looked like a violin. I love violin. I thought, "Yes, this is it." But then the accordion began to appear. Then it all fell apart. And I literally felt wide. This is a piano. The grand piano is black. Surprisingly, somehow not white. I really like the white piano. But this is a black piano. I checked its sound from the "C" note. The sound was very deep. Then I thought, why do I start with such low notes, why? But I interrupted these thoughts. After all, "before" sounded great. I checked all the keys. It was really me. I was expanding. Unexpected expansion. I was afraid to go up, it seemed to me that it would not work, because I was too wide. I decided not to get up, but I was intrigued. I have to get up. There is little room on the chair. I moved, I don't know how it looked from the outside, but I was a piano, you can extract anything from this instrument, play whatever you want."

P: You seemed to want at first to find just your favorite instrument, but you turned out to be a piano.

K: I also love the piano, but I probably wanted to be so petite, elegant as a violin, feminine.

P: The violin is feminine …

K: Yes. But the violin was replaced by the accordion. I know why. My grandfather played the accordion. This is the image of love. The piano … I never even touched it (pause). You know, I just realized that the piano is too luxurious, it really was from another world. Now I realized that I underestimate myself. I am a piano. I don't want to play the fool with the violin.

P: To play the fool?

K: Yes, my capabilities are more than a feminine violin. I am a piano. We must admit this to ourselves. Yes, I know. I know the reason for my loneliness. There is too much of me. I can do everything. I sound in every way. Who can stand it. But I'm glad. This exercise just showed me that you can't go anywhere. I am a piano. I like it. I have more faith in my projects, I can play anything.

P: What, for example?

K: Everything.

P: Cancan?

K: Why not?

P: Can you?

K: Yes.

(Pause)

K: What do you mean now?

P: If possible. Is it possible? You don't need to invent anything. Can a grand piano perform a cancan?

K: He can try.

P: Will he try?

K. Laughs.

P: The piano is confused.

K: Yes, a little. No, he can (makes a sound like a cancan).

P: Is the body of the instrument separate from the sound?

K: I wanted to get up. But I'm afraid to look crazy.

P: Crazy … Doesn't the piano play "everything."

K: Yes. But he is timid for now.

P: A few minutes ago, he wasn't like that.

The client gets up and performs the cancan.

P: Crazy piano.

K: Yes. In fact, it all gave me, self-recognition.

Work options:

  1. Imagine yourself through the sound of a musical instrument.
  2. "Play" various thematic situations on the instrument, for example: "Having a baby", "Dating", "Finding a job", "Love triangle", etc.

Issues for discussion:

- What associations does the instrument evoke?

- Which of the beginnings: masculine or feminine manifests itself in him more?

- How does the instrument's sound characterize the client's temperament?

- What role can the client play in the context of the orchestra (solo, first violin, etc.)?

- What are the realities of the work done?

- What sensations does spontaneous sound and body improvisation evoke?

- How actively is the intellectual subtext expressed through sound?

- Has the client's self-esteem changed as a result?
