In sessions with clients, the topic of fear is periodically raised. People share their fears and we are trying to figure out what they are from, how they arise, how a person experiences this feeling, because for everyone, it turns out, this can happen in different ways. It is logical to explain to yourself the fear that appears at the moment of danger. It is understandable that we are afraid of a real threat. But there are inexplicable fears that seem to arise out of the blue. The feeling of fear, in my opinion, is never unfounded. Even if at the moment a person has nothing to fear and nothing threatens him, he probably once had a reason to be truly afraid and such an experience will remain in his memory that will remain with the person for life. It is difficult to call the fear of crossing the road rational, but once upon a time a person witnessed an accident when people were run over at the crossing. Fear and horror from what he saw left a signal of danger in his memory. DANGER. Our memory does such things with us to keep us safe. We remembered that this may be so and we must take care of ourselves. This is an instinct for self-preservation and it is formed in early childhood. Little children do not yet understand what is dangerous for them. They try, test and explore this world. And the task of parents is to protect and protect their child. Explain what is allowed and what is not. Basically, we are afraid of what might hurt or lead to death. And what events make you feel pain - it is already necessary to understand and dig deeper. After all, you can be injured not only physically, but also mentally. Scared to end your relationship? Perhaps there was a negative experience of parting, when a person experienced severe pain and does not want this to happen to him again. No one wants to re-experience the feelings that led to fear, were before the person began to be afraid. This feeling should not be avoided. You cannot forbid yourself to experience it. You can ignore it, but it will not lead to anything good. Fear is a marker of what is unsafe now, something that threatens peace and stability. And it would not be bad to figure out whether this is a real threat or in fact nothing threatens, but the unconscious "considered" it as a danger, because the situation is similar to what it was in reality. “A person who ceases to feel the fear and danger of death himself becomes socially dangerous” (Andrey Lorgus). He is unpredictable for society and for himself. There are a certain number of people on earth who, due to a genetic disease, do not feel fear. Nurses are assigned to them, their names are not disclosed and these are exceptions. Other people tend to experience this feeling.

Someone says that fear is a brake on development. Yes, if it prevents you from moving on and expressing yourself. If this is an irrational fear, when in fact there is nothing to be afraid of. That is why it is important to detect fear and find out the reason for its occurrence. Yes, you have to face fear. But not in order to be even more afraid and in a state of passion to "shove" ahead. Perhaps, it helps someone, as in the saying "they knock out a wedge with a wedge". But in such cases, you need to understand that you will have to answer for the consequences. It is important to detect and acknowledge fear in order to understand what it is protecting from now. Remember - the instinct for self-preservation. Fear of performing? Perhaps there was an experience of unsuccessful performance in front of an audience, which made it awkward or, even worse, ashamed. It is extremely unpleasant to feel shame and subsequently the fear is born that this will happen again. Once again, you will have to experience shame, hurt about the perception of yourself as somehow not so, inept, awkward or even stupid. Finding feelings that lead to fear, exploring them layer by layer, recognizing them in yourself, talking about them, reliving them is the way to change and the opportunity to try yourself in new conditions. Frozen, unlived feelings will always make themselves felt, manifest themselves illegally, and influence our lives. Their detection and legalization make a person freer. A person who has identified the causes of fear, realized the feelings associated with them, experienced them anew in a safe environment (for example, in a psychotherapist's office), can try to express himself, to be his own support. He is already more stable, does not freeze with fear and can move on.

Fear must be distinguished from terror. Fear can last indefinitely. The horror overtakes in a matter of minutes.

Fear must be distinguished from anxiety. Anxiety has no face, and fear is always directed specifically to something (someone). That is why we feel anxiety rather than fear from the unknown.

Fear can become more and less. Depending on the conditions in which the person is now. In stress, a person is more prone to fears. It is impossible to get rid of fear completely. A person will always remember the event or situation that caused this feeling. It's just that by working in the same therapy, a person acquires ways to deal with fear. Knowing the cause of your fears makes them less significant and diminishes in size.
