Each of us has some kind of ideology and faith. This certainly commands respect. But sometimes, beliefs need to be revisited. After all, the communication methods that worked 15 years ago are simply outdated or turned out to be incorrect.
So, today we are talking about violence against the minds of people with the notorious positive thinking. Julia, give your description of what is happening. - Today, modern society is structured around the principle of consumption. People consume more than they need, and few people ask the question: do I really need it and why? Interpersonal relationships are also shifted, for the most part, into this plane. A person uses another person for their own benefits and pleasures. Few people care about the depth and quality of communication. "Relationships should be easy, food should be fast, and life should be simple." We have forgotten how to wait, anticipate and create. Everyone worships success and prosperity. And in order to maintain this illusion, "positive thinking" is necessary. For me, this is a bit like a mania. A person, exposed to the idea of a positive, is not able to objectively assess the situation and measure it with reality. This is mania for the sake of mania. But then the question arises: what are you living for, or in spite of what? But in positive thinking, such questions do not arise, it is just a way to avoid the depth of thought.
QUESTION. And yet, can positive thinking serve for the good of something, where it is applicable and where it has taken root?
- Of course, there is a niche where this concept really works well, the corporate segment and corporate training. This is the place where people need to raise their general spirit and efficiency, where it is necessary that they perform specific tasks with maximum efficiency. While a strategic leader must be a good analyst, staying with a cool head in order to calculate ahead of time steps or view prospects. And here there will be no place for positive thinking. This concept, as a business project, justifies itself, but it should not be applied in everyday life. We often hear: "everything will be fine!" After all, if you start thinking, then "everything" is nothing. Everything is not good, and this must be reckoned with. And everyone who believes in total well-being will have to face it sooner or later.
- What literally "hurts" people who have been pressured by positive?
- We are all born with our own special history. No positive thinking can heal spiritual wounds, therefore it is a lie to oneself. Growing up means realizing that you can't do everything. You are limited by your physical capabilities, time, internal resources. As after the day, night always comes. So, there is no happiness without sadness. Much in this world is not endless, including you and me. And positive thinking tries to hide it from reflection and awareness and is therefore quite costly. Instead of thinking, we try diligently to avoid it. And this mental conflict is most often compensated psychosomatically.
- Julia, what methods do you propose to counter positive thinking?
- In my opinion, the best thing that can happen to you is getting to know yourself. If you have inner experiences, and you find it difficult to cope with them on your own (sometimes it is not even possible), seek help from a qualified specialist. Fortunately, at the moment it is accepted in culture, and we are moving towards Europe, where it is massively widespread and even welcomed.
- In general, what do you think is correct, most comfortable and painless in terms of belief in something, beliefs, acceptance of some ideology?
- You have an interesting question. Correct, comfortable and painless. It's like being in the womb. Maintaining an optimal temperature, constant nutrition and the absence of external irritants. If you are a person who lives and feels - these are impossible conditions for a long time, and even more so throughout your life. Yes, we may very much want this, but circumstances will remind us otherwise. It's easier to balance comfort and discomfort, allow yourself to get hurt when it hurts, and choose your own right, even if it doesn't work for the other.
- Yulia, what are the prospects for this movement / phenomenon in the upcoming post-quarantine crisis period? - I think this period was good for people in terms of psychological growth. We all met with limitations. And each of us was forced to learn how to get along with it. This period exposed weaknesses and helped to reflect. For some, it will be the difficulty of meeting oneself, for some, the feeling of loneliness and emptiness will come to the fore. In the process of psychotherapy, a person is faced with similar things, but he has the opportunity to see it in a more constructive format, not to boil in it himself and not to go to extremes, while improving the quality of life. But such significant meetings cannot take place in a positive way, unfortunately, transformation does not take place in another way. It is always painful to part with your illusions and anxious to face the unknown. Everything in this life is relative … If you fall into the positive, then sooner or later - expect the negative in the same intensity. This is how the laws of nature and the universe work. Therefore, I wish you to be able to balance in life, find joy in the moments and always leave a small place for sadness.
