Depression Is the queen of negative emotions. On the one hand, it is a very unpleasant emotional state characterized by depressed mood, apathy, decreased activity, sleep disturbance, and dullness of emotions. On the other hand, depression distracts us from the outside world and forces us to return to ourselves, to think about what we really want from life and what we are doing wrong. This is the main positive function of depression - to stop a person who is trying to run away from himself and runs in a vicious circle. In our life, we often do not know what we really want. Often we follow some kind of program prescribed for us by our parents or society. For example, to become a lawyer, get married by 25, have 2 children no later than 30, earn a million a month, rest only abroad …

But do we need this for happiness? Is this what we really want ?! Typically, depression does not start suddenly. Usually it is preceded by a period of accumulation of dissatisfaction with life. And this is already a reason to stop and think that we are doing wrong. But what are we doing instead? Right!!! We are trying even more furiously and stubbornly to achieve those mirages that are prescribed to us from outside.

And here depression is already waiting for us. It begins in any case: either when we achieve everything that we were so eager and striving for and begin to understand that this is not at all what we wanted, and what we have achieved does not bring us satisfaction; or when we cannot achieve this due to some circumstances and feel like failures who did not live up to our hopes. Depression stops us and makes us think about ourselves and the meaning of our existence. Sometimes it is unbearably painful, and we start to struggle with it, try to distract ourselves or drink antidepressants. But can pills help us to rethink our goals and values, find answers to inner questions, find our path and purpose? Of course not! They only temporarily suppress the depressive state, translating it into a latent or chronic form. Therefore, drug treatment for depression is not effective.

Where to find a way out? What will be right for depression?

The first is to accept the fact that everything that happens to us is quite natural and stop fighting depression. Just let it be! The second thing that it is important to strive for is to comprehend what led to this state of affairs, to analyze when and how it started, and what I did or did wrong. If the first is still a feasible task, then the second for a person who is depressed may seem like something from the realm of fantasy. Like the way Baron Munchausen pulled himself out of a swamp by his hair. Objectively analyze WHAT, and most importantly, WHY it happens in life, find the origins of all this, figure out which desires and aspirations are really yours, and which ones are imposed from the outside, what is really important for happiness and well-being and in which direction you need to go - sometimes it turns out very difficult and sometimes even impossible.

The secret is that our psyche is arranged, so that our brain, or rather, our consciousness gives false answers to these questions, which are called rationalization. The real answers lie much deeper - in the unconscious, and you can get to them only with the help of a psychologist's advice. With the help of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, you can understand the causes of your condition, understand where you turned from your path, what you did wrong, and what you really want. Once these questions are answered, depression tends to subside. Although there are isolated cases when the causes of depression lie much deeper.

Sometimes the cause of depression can lie in our infancy. A depressive position can also be formed if the mother had postpartum depression during the first months after childbirth, or the baby did not receive satisfactory emotional contact with the mother due to her anxiety or detachment. In such cases, depression is much more severe and is accompanied by suicidal thoughts, despair, feelings of loneliness, abandonment and hopelessness.

Here, the treatment of depression lasts a little longer and may take more than one year. If depression is caused by a life crisis, loss of the meaning of life and dissatisfaction, then with timely referral to a psychologist, relief of the condition and return to normal life occurs much faster.

The most important thing is not to try to suppress depression, but to immediately seek psychological help in order to understand its causes and find ways out of this state.
