R. Guénon distinguishes between burial caves and initiatic caves, although a direct connection is established between them. Physical death is essentially analogous to initiatory death. The descent into Purgatory turns out to be symbolically equivalent to a journey into the underworld, to which a cave opens access. But death is at the same time a second birth. In this sense, the cave is likened to the womb of the mother.

The cave is associated with the elements of the earth, as with the feminine principle giving birth, and at the moment of death, the earth turns out to be an absorbing element. One and the same cave usually serves as both a place of initiatory death and a place of rebirth, that is, it should open access not only to underground, chthonic regions, but also to aboveground ones, which is consistent with the concept of the Center of the World, which communicates with all states micro- and macrocosm.

Thus, a cave can be a complete image of the world, since all the most important images and symbols must be reflected in it.

The cave, as a rule, is watched from the side, waiting for some creature to leave it. Usually these creatures are archaic in nature, personifying unconscious structures. Most often this is what a person fears most in himself. Interestingly, usually a person imagines himself waiting at the cave.

The expression "cave of the heart" exists to denote a person in a state of secrecy: on the one hand, he acts as a small point on the map of the Universe, on the other hand, it is the point that turns out to be the principle of constructing the entire system. Thus, we find an analogy with the embryonic state of a person - it is just a small point, which is a point of development.

The image of the cave is directly related to the process of the second birth and even the third. The first birth is physical. The second birth is called psychic rebirth, which takes place at the level of the capabilities of the human individuality, while the third birth takes place in the spiritual plane and opens the way to the supraindividual states of man. Thus, at the second stage, a human being only enters the cave, and the final exit from it is accomplished as an exit into Cosmos at the third stage, which corresponds to the Russian word "resurrection".

The exit from the cave is carried out either through a separate opening, or through the same entrance, sometimes it is called the "cosmic eye". Usually, going out into the light reveals the real essence of the initiation that took place, namely, an understanding comes: what we previously considered to be reality is in fact only its reflection, like Plato's shadows in a cave.

The image of water is related to the unconscious structures of the human psyche. Depending on how the water is presented - a stream, a river, a river mouth, going out into the sea, an ocean, a waterfall - this is how intrapsychic conflicts are reflected.

The world's waters are the environment from which all living beings emerged. Water is something common where a person feels his kinship with the life around him. Particularly interesting in this respect is the appeal to those states and images that accompanied a person in his embryonic state.
